244.1 | Interleaf & CDA plans | LOWELL::WEISENFELD | | Thu Dec 28 1989 12:33 | 20 |
| This is a very enlightened question...glad you asked.
At this time, there are no plans to produce an Interleaf-to-SDML
converter for either text or graphics.
However, Jeff Rudy's CDA group is surrently working on a
DDIF-to-Bookreader converter that would be part of the CDA converter
library in the future. This is REAL GOODNESS in that any text
formatting product that outputs standard DDIF format could be used as
an authoring tool for Bookreader documents. The bad news is that this
converter product looks to be about twelve months away from delivery,
but if you'd like to see it sooner, send mail to the CDA folks!
This is goodness also for Interleaf users in that Interleaf has agreed
to supporting DDIF output from Interleaf files. By combining this
support from Interleaf with the DDIF-to-Bookreader converter, Interleaf
files would be readable by the Bookreader.
So, while we don't have a solution today, there are people working on
it for the near(ish) term.

244.2 | internal use only | MARKUP::DEVRIES | By their notes ye shall know them | Fri Dec 29 1989 09:27 | 11 |
| Remember, of course, this is all internal planning stuff, not an
announced product or program. So we can't tell the customers anything
except that they have good ideas and we'd like to see it happen, too.
To reign in the expectations a little more: a DDIF file, to be
formatted/converted into a Bookreader file, would probably have to use
certain constructs and follow certain conventions. Interleaf would not
only have to put out a DDIF file, but one that did the right things.
So don't expect magic any time soon, alas.

244.3 | | LEAF::COLELLO | Bette Jean 226-7223 | Thu Jan 04 1990 10:30 | 18 |
| I've done some work (personally) using Interleaf software that
uses effectivity (Document's <set_condition>) to make the file
be either a .sdml file or an Interleaf file. What I've done is
conditionalized the catalogs in Interleaf (Document's designs) so
that the user can request either a document file or an Interleaf file.
The project is a bit flat right now and I'm not sure where it's going.
There are a lot of holes ie: no graphics, and a lot of manual
intervention.
So it can be done if the customer wants to customize their catalogs.
The beauty of it is that it's not a third entity... it's in the
Interleaf software itself.
My suggestion is to keep pushing the CDA folks and Interleaf folks!
This line of communication is real important for the publishing
community.

244.4 | Check with Interleaf | MDVAX3::SOCHA | In search of funding | Thu Jan 18 1990 16:04 | 7 |
| The customer I am working with that uses Interleaf heavily has
told me that Interleaf indicated that they had written tools to convert
from Interleaf to Bookreader format, and that these were available
for an unspecified price. So you may want to have your customer check
with Interleaf.

244.5 | dubious | CLOSET::UTT | | Fri Jan 19 1990 07:43 | 11 |
| The 'Bookreader format' is a private format that has been released to
no one outside the company. I seriously doubt that Interleaf can write
out Bookreader format, although they would like to. (The Bookwriter
routines are not stable enough to release outside the company.) I have
heard that Interleaf has its own sort of online documentation utility
-- perhaps your customer has confused the Bookreader with that? I would
be interested in any more details you can supply about this.
Thanks,
Mary
