I'm in Ed Services (ESDP in ZKO) and am planning to convert a text based course I wrote to Bookreader format. I have a few questions. The LAVC I'm on is going to be upgraded to 5.3 very soon. From what I've read here, that means that I will only be able to work on V2 of the Bookreader. Is that correct? Will not having access to V1 of the Bookreader be a problem? Are people currently working effectively on systems where they only have V2 of the Bookreader? The product will apparently go to SDC in June. Will customers have V2 of the Bookreader by then? I keep reading about CUP online tools and doctypes. Since I'm not in CUP, how can I find out exactly what I need for tools, where to copy the savesets, and so forth? It seems like people in CUP are pretty well set up at the system level to do this work. Not too many of us in ESDP have actually developed courses for the Bookreader yet, so the people who manage our systems aren't as aware of the procedures and tools needed. I have extracted note 64 about the online tools - can these be used on another system outside of CUP? Are there any dependencies besides using Document V1.2? Where can I get the online doctypes? I have also extracted note 204, describing V2 format. I also have copies of "Creating Online Documentation for the DECwindows Bookreader" (November 1989) and "Guide to Producing Online Documentation" (April 1989). Are these the latest versions of these guides, or are there newer versions? Thanks for any help you can give me. I need to be able to give our system manager a list of exactly what I need, what to do, and where everything I need is located. Holly Hendricks

The current version of the online tools (see note 64.12) supports the V2 Bookreader. To build books for that version of the Bookreader, you must install those tools. Note, however, that the V2 Bookreader can read *both* V1 and V2 books, so any old online books that you may have around will be readbable. I believe that the VMS 5.3 and DECwindows V2.0 (with which the V2.0 Bookreader is bundled) are shipping now. This notes conference is the primary source of information about the availability of tools, in note 64, for CUP and for anyone else who wishes to use them. They can be installed on any system that meets the software requirements specified in note 64.12. That note is completely up to date regarding software and documentation (BUT, see also note 236, which I've just entered about DOCUMENT V1.2B). As to related documentation, I will post a note from a CUP notes conference (I thought it was already in here but I find it's not, so I'll put it in). Hope this helps, Mary | |||||

You might also keep an eye on WAGON::ESDP_EPUBS. That's the conference that discusses the publishing tools and procedures supported by, used by, and/or requested by ESDP. Mark |
