215.0. "numbered lists problem" by AITG::WARNER (It's only work if they make you do it) Fri Oct 27 1989 17:00

Problem with the 6-OCT online bookbuilding tools:

When list items in a numbered list exceed 9, the numbers run up to the list
items. For example:

12This is the twelfth list item.

(I suppose that if you go over 99, they'll collide.)

re .1:

What does "next release" mean? I'm using the 27-Oct baselevel and see the same
problem with numbered list items 10 and over.

Also, it seems to me that there's not enough whitespace between list items, but
much too much between paragraphs. Thus, when you have paragraphs in some list
items, the spacing makes the paragraphs look like they're associated with the
wrong item. Like this:

o First list item.

Short paragraph explaining first item in detail.
o Second list item.
o Third list item.

Sentence that belongs with third item, not fourth.
o Fourth list item.

It's really distracting to the reader.

Finally, IMHO, the bullets used for unnumbered lists look kinda weird. They're
squished little rectangles that sit right on the baseline. I guess the shape
was chosen to avoid confusion with any clickable screen object, but I don't
think they have enough visual weight next to a capital letter. And shouldn't
they be centered vertically w.r.t. a line of text? I'd suggest maybe some kind
of heavy horizontal dash at x-height.

    re .2:

    1. Next release -- VAX DOCUMENT V1.2B, which should be announced
momentarily in the VAX DOCUMENT notes conference (note
       2.something, I believe).

    2. White space -- we'll look into that and add it to the list for
format cleanups for the next release after V1.2B.

    3. Squishy bullets -- those were an unfortunate and unexpected side
effect of the Bookreader's V2.0 support for monitor independence.
CUP/ZK seems to be moving away from square bullets and I think the
online formats should do likewise. So that's another one for format
cleanups after the next release after V1.2B.

(Is anyone particularly attached to square bullets rather than round
    bullets? Why?)

    Thanks,

I'm having the same problem with alpha lists, starting at "a". There
should be a space between the letter and the first word.

    	a.text
        b.text
        c.text
        d.text

I also have a list where a. through h. line up and i. pops out to the
left. Any thoughts on fixing that? The coding is consistent for all
    the <LE>s.

    Hi Holly,
Could you please send me a small .SDML file that I could use to
test for this problem? I've tried to duplicate it, without any luck so
    far.

    Thanks,
