| In the $BOOKVERIFY BOOKNAME command, is BOOKNAME something like
file.DECW$BOOK? I.e., is it the file that has been processed with an
ONLINE doctype and BOOKREADER destination?
What kind of checking does the utility actually do?
(Sorry if these sound like awfully naive questions; I'm converting
a hardcopy book to online for the first time, and the concepts and
terminology are all new to me.)

| Hi,
BOOKNAME is the filename.DECW$BOOK file. I just tried it and found
that out..
I have the output from the analysis and now need help! Much of the
analysis is cryptic.
1. What constitutes and entry?
2. What do I look for when it says an entry has a missing title in the
TOC?
Are they missing a symbolic reference?
3. What does it mean when it says an entry in the index is too small?
4. What does it mean when it says that an entry in the index has
a missing title
Thanks,
Ruth-Ellen

> 1. What constitutes and entry?
Each line in the table of contents or index is an entry.
> 2. What do I look for when it says an entry has a missing title in the
> TOC?
Run the bookreader. This means that the "title" portion of the entry
will not show up when you are looking at the table of contents in
the bookreader with the scroll bar. This is not a serious error. It
can be ignored, for DOCUMENT.
> Are they missing a symbolic reference?
No, if the symbolic reference is missing a different message will
be displayed, telling you that the section has no symbol reference.
> 3. What does it mean when it says an entry in the index is too small?
This means that the index entry does not display well in bookreader.
When you run the bookreader and pull up the index, the entry may
be too small to read, or may not be seen at all.
> 4. What does it mean when it says that an entry in the index has
> a missing title
This is the same as when an entry in the table of contents has a missing
title. Using the scroll bar, the window displays items from the index.
when you get this error, that item will NOT appear in this display box.

147.6 | What do the messages mean? | ELUDE::GREMBOWICZ | | Tue Jun 13 1989 11:49 | 43 |

I have a few questions about the output from bookverify.
> Run the bookreader. This means that the "title" portion of the entry
> will not show up when you are looking at the table of contents in
> the bookreader with the scroll bar. This is not a serious error. It
> can be ignored, for DOCUMENT.
I ran bookverify and got the following message:
Entry 113 has missing title.
Last title "7.2.7.6 Overriding the Default Passing Mechanism
I looked in the bookreader and the titles of that section and the
next section were listed in the TOC. What title is missing?
> 4. What does it mean when it says that an entry in the index has
> a missing title
< This is the same as when an entry in the table of contents has a missing
< title. Using the scroll bar, the window displays items from the index.
< when you get this error, that item will NOT appear in this display box.
Does Entry 100 mean the 100th <x> tag in the book, starting with
Chapter 1, or does it mean the 100th entry in the Index?
I'm having trouble figuring out where to look to see what the problem
is.
What does the following message mean?
Popup contents are missing in "Example 5- 5: Updating Rows"
The popup contains the example, the TOC contains the title of
the example, and I can click on the listing in the TOC and the
reference in the text. What is "missing"?
Thanks for any help in explaining these messages!

147.7 | updated version of utility | DONVAN::SUSAN | | Wed Jun 21 1989 12:06 | 51 |
|
There is an update version of the book verification utility. It
will now give you LMF information.
Copy and install: CDROM::BVU011.A
<<< Note 147.0 by DONVAN::SUSAN >>>
-< new book verification utility >-
The new book verification utility is completed and ready for test/use.
It checks each figure, popups, topics, cross-references, TOC and Index.
After running over the book, it creates a .ANALYSIS file.
It can be copied from CDROM::BVU010.A and then use VMSINSTAL to
install it. If you are on a cluster, your system manager will have to
do an install replace of the DCL tables.
Once installed the following commands/output can be used:
1. $BOOKVERIFY BOOKNAME /OUTPUT=OUTPUTFILE
OR
2. $BOOK BOOKNAME
These two commands send all output to the terminal and create a
synopsized .ANALYSIS file
3. $BOOK/NOOUTPUT BOOKNAME
Sends no output anywhere, all you get are the messages. Any problems
will be noted.
4. $BOOK/FULL/OUTPUT=OUTFILE BOOKNAME
Sends all the outputto the output file

147.8 | What's causing the missing titles? | DECWET::OSHEA | Kate O'Shea | Mon Jun 26 1989 16:08 | 11 |
| When TOC titles are missing from the special scrollbar window, is it
because the previous title is too long? If so, isn't this a Bookreader
bug?
If not, what *is* causing the TOC title to be missing from the
scrollbar window?
And what causes index entries to be missing from the scrollbar
window? Is this also a length problem?

147.9 | Book Verification notes: | CDROM::JAGGER | | Mon Jun 26 1989 17:37 | 43 |
| If you have any questions feel free to contact the developer
(Tom Jagger). I can explain it alot better over the phone. You may
also bring your listings over. Several comments about the utility.
1. It knows nothing about SDML.
2. The terms POP UP refers to figures, tables, examples, footnotes etc,
that appear in their own window.
3. The term text section refers to a sub topic. It refers to what is
also called a chunk.
4. The table of contents and the index are both called directories, and
are treated the same.
5. There is a file called bookverify.values in sys$system that can
be edited. These are the system defaults in inches for sizes of
things. You can change only the values or units of this file.
The other units are (nothing), cm for centimeters and ' for inches.
6. The term "popup contens are missing" means that the popup may
not have any contents. So, when you click on it you should see
a nearly empty box. Let me know otherwise.
7. The values in bookverify.values must be changed for each online
doctype. Please use your discretion. Measurements are actual screen
measurements for the 75 dpi terminal.
8. Entry nn has missing title. That means that the table of contents or
index entry is missing its ASCII title. You won't see the problem
until the scroll bar is used to move items in the CONTENTS or INDEX
window. It is a bug, so ignore it and report them to Mary Utt. This
should be fixed so NO coded file should give this problem.
9. Any questions call me at DTN 381-1118 or send mail to CDROM::JAGGER
I am relocating to Colorado Springs so I would like to wrap up work
on these utilities.
Use the utility, and I will make changes as requested.

147.10 | is there a new version for Bookreader V2 files? | SHOLES::HEBERT | Cyberdyne Systems Model 101-A | Thu May 03 1990 14:46 | 20 |
| Has this program been updated to work with books produced for V2 of the
Bookreader?
I just discovered that we have an old version (dated 19-MAY-1989) on
our cluster, but it doesn't work with my recent books.
$ book epc_profile.decw$book
BOOK-W-NOFT No output file. All output will be displayed on terminal.
%BOOKREADR-W-OPENIN, error opening
BEGOOD$DUA0:[JEFF.TOPROD]EPC_PROFILE.DECW$BOOK; as input
-BOOKREADR-W-INVBKVERS, Invalid book version
BOOK-F-FNB The file: BEGOOD$DUA0:[JEFF.TOPROD]EPC_PROFILE.DECW$BOOK; is
not a bookreader book.
I ran it on an old (V1 Bookreader) version of the book and got some
interesting output. I'd like to run it on my latest book if a newer
version exists.

However, according to Michele' Cicalese (CUP OLD program manager),
the Book Verification Utility *will* be updated and supported for
