A HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPACT DISK DRIVE FOR SOFTWARE STORAGE
	 AND RETRIEVAL

	 600 MEGABYTES OF CAPACITY

SCSI AND QBUS INTERFACE; ETHERNET ACCESS TO OTHER SYSTEMS

FRONT LOADING DEVICE WITH AN AVERAGE ACCESS TIME OF LESS THAN 500MS

INTRODUCTION

Imagine 200,000 pages of information in the palm of your hand. The
compact disk holds this amount of data safely and conveniently,
replacing huge amounts of paper or...reels and reels of tape.

Digital is committed to CDRom as the primary distribution device for
VMS, documentation, and other software layered products. Users can now update
their entire VMS operating system in one step. Searches through the VMS
documentation set will take seconds instead of minutes, and customers will
save over 20 feet of shelf space currently devoted to their documentation
manuals.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The RRD40 is Digital's high performance CDRom Drive for customers using
CD distributed products. The drive has an average seek time of less than
500ms, and a transfer rate of 150kb/s. It's capacity of 600MB makes it
ideal for holding a large number of software applications, stored
on a single, compact disc.

The SCSI RRD40 comes in both a half height form and a table top enclosure.
Compact disks are front loaded into the drive using a protective caddie.
Customers using multiple compact discs with multiple applications can daisy
chain two drives together on their VAXstation 3100. The Qbus RRD40
comes in a tabletop enclosure. It is sold with a controller
that fits into the backplane of either a Microvax II or Microvax 35/3600.
Customers can fit two drives on each controller.

Both SCSI and Qbus versions of the RRD40 can be accessed by other systems
through the ethernet.

COMPETITIVE POSITIONING

The RRD40 should be positioned as the device of choice for CD software
loading and distribution. This is because it has been designed for
high reliability and availability. Its robust design and loading caddie
ensure vital data integrity. Onboard diagnostics allow a fault to be
detected quickly, and contribute to the drive's high availability.

In addition, the RRD40 has been designed to meet Digital standards for SCSI
devices. These meet or exceed industry standards for SCSI. A customer
buying the RRD40 can be sure there will be no problems using it on the
Vaxstation 3100 SCSI bus.

The RRD40 will replace Digital's existing CDROM drive, the RRD50. Compared
to the RRD50, it is a higher performance drive. It's seek time is three
times faster. In addition, it offers higher reliability and a more compact,
convenient front-load design.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

* Will Digital be supporting the ISO 9660 format?

Supporting this information format is on VMS' list of planned
enhancements. There is nothing in the RRD40 hardware that would prevent
eventually supporting this format. VMS has not announced a date or
schedule for supporting the ISO 9660 format. Customer interest in this
format should be conveyed to VMS product management or the RRD40
product manager.

* Digital already has a CDRom drive. Why is this one better?

Digital's existing CDRom drive is available only with a Qbus or
Ibus interface. The RRD40's SCSI interface allows it to connect with a wide
range of Digital workstations. The RRD40 is also faster, front loading,
and available in two packaging configurations.

* How should I sell the RRD40 against lower priced SCSI drives?

The RRD40 offers both high reliability and availability,
critical characteristics for a software load and distribution device.
The drive also meets Digital's SCSI standards which are higher than
industry standards and ensure trouble free access to the SCSI bus.
