141.0. "Hyphens and dashes" by DSSDEV::EPPES (I'm not making this up, you know) Wed May 24 1989 11:30

    When you code SDML files for hardcopy output, you're supposed to use
    two hyphens to produce an en dash and three hyphens to produce an em
    dash. Unfortunately, in online output, these dashes come out as two
    hyphens or three hyphens. I suppose it's due to the online font, but
    it looks bad, especially if you're using two hyphens to produce an
    en dash for a minus sign.

141.1Bet this is another T1.2 problemAITG::WARNERRoss WarnerWed May 24 1989 15:005
    I'll bet you're using DOCUMENT T1.2. Bookreader files I made with V1.1
    come out fine: -- is an en dash. I used them in math, both in lists and
    tables, for the minus sign.

    Thanks for noting this. We recently received new fonts and apparently
    a change made to handle hyphens and dashes did not get made to them.
    I'll look into this.

    DECwindows fonts support the ISOLatin1 character set (VAX DOCUMENT
    supports an extended MCS character set). There are no en- and em-
    dashes in the ISO char set so, in the first version of the fonts,
    I made some changes such that 1, 2, or 3 hyphens typed in the file
    would always come out as 1 hyphen. (Typographical purists will
    object to this but it does look better than 2 or 3 hyphens strung
    together.) Eventually, the DECwindows fonts will support a publishing
    character set and the problem will go away.

    Any chance it will be coming our way before May 31 (the date we submit
    our Bookreader files for the July CDROM release)? :-)

    P.S.  RE .2 - yes, we're using DOCUMENT T1.2.

    Can someone give us an estimate of when this problem will be fixed?

    Waiting for the fix is much more appealing than changing (and possibly
    conditionalizing for online vs hardcopy) a lot of source code.

    Thanks,

    Welll...I just ran my book through the new June baselevel, and I'm
    still getting one hyphen for an em dash and one hyphen for a hyphen. I
    thought this problem would be fixed in this baselevel. I'm using
    online.hand.

141.8VAXUUM::UTTMon Jul 24 1989 16:359
    That *is* the fix. As noted in .2, the en- and em-dash characters do
    not exist in the DECwindows fonts (which use the ISOLatin-1 char set).
    Therefore, the only solution possibly is to make them all single
    hyphens.

    I mentioned in .2 that at some point DEC would support a publishing
    char set online. I have absolutely no idea when that might happen.

141.9string of hyphens collapses to oneAITG::ISENJoyce, 291-8230 DLB5-2Wed Jul 26 1989 12:3735
Each group of hyphens in the following code example is now getting collapsed
into one hyphen:

Source code:

<code_example>(wide)
Parameter Name Current Default Minimum Maximum Unit Dynamic
--------------          -------   -------   -------   ------- ----  -------
GBLSECTIONS                 512       250        20      4095 Sections
<endcode_example>

Former Output:

Parameter Name Current Default Minimum Maximum Unit Dynamic
--------------          -------   -------   -------   ------- ----  -------
GBLSECTIONS                 512       250        20      4095 Sections

Output with June bookbuilding kit:

Parameter Name Current Default Minimum Maximum Unit Dynamic
-          -   -   -   - -  -
GBLSECTIONS                 512       250        20      4095 Sections

Can you suggest a way to preserve the strings of hyphens? I realize they're a
cheap substitute for underlining, but the code example is meant to duplicate
the output of the VMS SYSGEN utility. Thanks.
