92.0. "FT packaging for OLD?" by DELNI::J_QUIGLEY () Fri Mar 03 1989 09:09

    How was online documentation packaged for DECwindows field test?
    Were the files sent out on the same medium as the software?
    Was CDROM involved at this early stage?

    I go to field test on April 24 and am not sure of the proper
    procedure for getting my online files to customers.

    The DECwindows online documentation was distributed as a separately
    installable magtape kit for field test. Some CDs were made and
    distributedbut only as a field test for the CD processes and
    procedures. I do not believe that CDs will normally be pressed for
    field test documentation.

    For more information about online documentation distribution for
    field tests and for product releases, contact Marian Weisenfeld,
    online documentation product manager, BLUMON::WEISENFELD.

    Thanks,

92.2Perhaps even a consolidated FT offering ...STAR::ROBERTMon Mar 06 1989 08:1327
Actually, we hope that ALL field test software and documentation will
be CD only at some future TBS date (but perhaps not such a distant
future as you might expect).

CD is the corporate preferred media for a data distribution. It may
not seem that way just yet because of the low penetration, but that
will change significantly before year end, and FT, along with internal
use, may be one of the "frontiers of progress" in the migration from
traditional media and paper to CD.

There are three primary reasons for this with respect to FT:

	An online copy can be shared, as opposed to limited
	paper distribution for FT. *

	Online is too "large" for traditional media.

	Reducing FT costs, including extending the time to market
	cycle, are an opportunity to become more competitive.

* I'm sure that "at least one paper copy" will remain common
  for some time, but we will likely encourage FT sites for
  most/all software to have some workstations and CD readers
  available, where "encourage" might be "an offer you can't
  refuse" ;-)
