86.0. "Change bar problem" by MTWAIN::MCCAFFREY () Fri Feb 17 1989 11:49
I am unable to build a book with change bars. I'm using 16 January
baselevel software. What seems to be happening is that the build gets to
a point beyond which no further information is going into the log file, but
the .DVI_BOOKREADER file continues to grow. The last build I attempted went
on for about four hours and over 10,000 blocks was used in producing the
.DVI_BOOKREADER file. I finally deleted the job from the batch queue.
When I remove all <REVISION> tags, the book builds just fine.
The book builds fine for hardcopy. Other chapters in the book which
also contain <MARK> and <MARK_DELETION> tags build successfully.
The ONLINE_CLEANUP file does not indicate that there is anything
out of the ordinary that would prevent a build.
I was able to successfully build (and view) another book with change bars.
Is there a known problem with building large books with change bars?
Has anyone else encountered this?
The log file is included here. I've stripped many "line too long" messages
of which there were often more than 30 of these per page of text when
they occurred.

| I was not aware of any problems with change bars. Would you send
me the chapter that is having the problem you describe?
Thanks,
Mary

| The next baselevel of the bookbuilding tools (soon, folks, soon!)
will contain modifications for change bars. The output is still
not 100% (there are sometimes breaks in the bars around headers)
but TeX does not hang any more (or at least it doesn't hang on
Colleen's chapter!). We'll continue to work on the problem. Please
report any further problems with/complaints about change bars in
this note.
Thanks,
Mary
