| We always use a white background for the figures because the artwork is
drawn assuming black drawings on white and we have no way of knowing
what the user has (re)set the default to. If the user has set
his/her default background to black, text and other details on the
drawing will be lost from view.

45.2 | But is it possible? | CRAYON::GENT | There is no poetry without madness -- Democritus | Thu Dec 15 1988 08:48 | 10 |
| Hmm.... Let me rephrase that. Is there anyway to have RAGS
diagrams use the default foreground and background color, rather
than explicit black and white? (There is a slight inconsistency
because FSE binary files do not show up with a white background.)
We have a special need to have RAGS diagrams appear as really
part of the text rather than a figure.
Thanks,

45.3 | clarification? | STAR::KRAETSCH | NeXt Window Please | Thu Dec 15 1988 13:41 | 2 |
| Are you looking for the defaults that are in effect when the figure is created
or those that are in effect when the figure is displayed?

rest of the text "page"...)

45.5 | not in v1 | STAR::KRAETSCH | NeXt Window Please | Thu Dec 15 1988 17:32 | 16 |
| That's what I was afraid of. There is no way in the current version of RAGS
or the graphics display routines in the v1 Bookreader to do this. We are
looking into it for the future, but there are a lot of issues with color
graphics that could get involved.
If it's really important to use the default colors in v1, the only way to
do it is to use bitmaps. As you noticed, these are displayed with default
background and foreground.
An earlier version of the Bookreader used the default background for RAGS
graphics, but if that default was a dark color (worst case Black), parts of
graphics became invisible or hard to see. Many of the graphics were drawn
assuming they would be printed on white paper. This is why we put the
explicit white background up before displaying the graphic.

45.7 | use MOPS for DECW$BOOKFIG... | AITG::WARNER | Ross Warner | Tue Jun 13 1989 12:42 | 5 |
| I understand that if you use MOPS to create a DECW$BOOKFIG file from
the RAGS metafile, you can use a qualifier to get the default colors.
You can also scale the figure, etc., using any MOPS qualifiers. If I
can find the precise qualifiers for the color issue, I'll write another
reply to this note.

45.9 | /NOBACKGROUND MOPS qualifier | AITG::WARNER | Ross Warner | Tue Jun 13 1989 16:37 | 7 |
| The MOPS command is:
MOPS test.rags/NOBACKGROUND/output=FILE.DECW$BOOKFIG
The /NOBACKGROUND overrides the background color used when creating the
RAGS metafile, and instead allows the graphic to take on the background
color defined by the user in the Session Manager window.

| For a complete listing of MOPS qualifiers see note 311.1 and 311.2 in
the DOC_GRAPHICS notesfiles on CLOSET::.
Also, refer to note 396.4 of that conference for the default color
explanation with respect to bookbuilding files.
