43.0. "Multiple index entries" by CURIE::HARTSHORN () Fri Dec 09 1988 14:58

When a multiple index entry is selected a pop-up window appears that
lists the various topics that contain the selected index entry. You
may then select the topic and the BOOKREADER will take you to the
index entry selected for the topic selected.

I have just put a book on-line that has the same index entry under 95
different topics. When I select this topic one of two things
happens; The BOOKREADER exits and gives me a stack dump, or a pop-up
window appears but only lists 10 or so entries.

I assume that the BOOKREADER's exiting is a bug and will one day be
fixed.

Are there plans in the works to put scroll bars on these pop-up
windows? Or to do something else that will accommodate long lists
of associated topics?

We do plan to do something more graceful with the popup beyond version 1
of the Bookreader. However, v1 if virtually out the door and you won't
see any change for v1. The Bookreader uses a DECwindows toolkit menu
widget for the list of topics. I suspect we are running into some
limit within the toolkit. Can you send me a pointer to the book so I
can take a look at it?

Meanwhile, your only option is to restructure the index so there are not
so many targets for each entry. Personally, I find indices with more than
10 targets to an entry very difficult to use. I don't like wading through
10 topics (let alone 95!) to find the one I'm really looking for.
...I wonder if we should call it a feature! :-)

I am aware that we may build some books that we can't control the index
organization for, such as spec's for standards, government documents, etc.

Hmm. I just got the following stack dump when I clicked on an index entry
that appears in only 2 places. I didn't get any pop-up window...
