22.0. "No TOC with BOOKREADER destination!" by STAR::AKI (Kemlo) Mon Oct 31 1988 09:48

I'm using the "real" DOCUMENT V1.1 (not the pre-release version) and
the latest BOOKREADER destination files to build a large book. The
book builds fine for postscript, but won't build for online.

The failure to build is obviously due to the following error:

%DVC-3-DVCNOCONTENTS, no contents file found

However, there *is* a table of contents, because TEX formatted the contents
just fine:

%TEX-I-PAGESOUT, 3 pages written.
%TEX-I_OUTFILENAME, 'RONYON$DUA0:[PVAX]S1015PRO_CONTENTS.DVI_BOOKREADER'

There are no TAG errors in the log file. (I also ran the build with /DIAG,
which indicated no errors.) The only Text Formatting errors are "Line too
long" errors, which shouldn't affect the table of contents, and two
informational messages on "Possible table paging problem."

The book is a three part book (three part pages) with 16 chapters, 3
appendices, and a glossary. According to TEX, there were 708 pages
written to the .DVI_BOOKREADER file.

What am I missing? Anyone know what could be happening here? I'm open to
any and all suggestions...

Thanks!

Kemlo

22.1Are you using <CONTENTS_FILE>?CRAYON::GENTThere is no poetry without madness -- DemocritusMon Oct 31 1988 12:076
    Hi Kemlo,

    I believe you have to include the <CONTENTS_FILE> tag in your book.
    The TOC has to be *in* the book. It can't be separate file.

    The "no contents file found" means the Device converter didn't process
    a contents file (or at least it believes that it didn't) .1's answer
    sounds like a good bet but if thats not it I'd appreciate a pointer
    to your files so I can see what the DVC is doing.

    Thanks

22.3Argh... missing <CONTENTS_FILE>ROXXY::AKIKemloFri Nov 04 1988 16:5910
Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the suggestion - I was using someone else's front matter file
for the build (we've got several writers contributing to each of our books)
and didn't think to check for <CONTENTS_FILE>. Sure enough, it wasn't
there.

I'll try it again - if there are any problems, I'll let you know.

22.4DSSDEV::EPPESI'm not making this up, you knowTue Apr 04 1989 17:20119
    I'm getting the same error message as .0 did, but it's when DOCUMENT is
    trying to include the *index* file! I'm trying to process one chapter,
    so I'm using a "mini-profile" as follows:

<PROFILE>

       <ELEMENT>(front_matter.sdml) <comment>(title pg and preface for test)

       <ELEMENT>(4804intro_chap.sdml)  <comment>(Chapter 1)

       <index_file>

<ENDPROFILE>

    FRONT_MATTER.SDML contains the title page, the <contents_file> tag, and
    the preface.

    Here's the log file in all its glory. (I'm not concerned about the
    undefined references, but I am concerned about the trademark table,
    which I will mention in another note.) Any suggestions would be
    appreciated. FWIW, another writer on my cluster was able to build
    chapters of her book (and ultimately the entire book) for online with
    no problem...

    Yep just found it. The pronblem Nina had in .4 was the argument
    to the <contents_file> tag was in lowercase. A quick fix is to change
    it to uppercase or don't supply an argument and let Document generate
    the filename.

    Yup, I removed the <contents_file> argument and my chapter built
    successfully!  Thanks, Mike.

    Oops... I'm sorry... I am getting different errors then previously
    listed here.... The errors I am getting follow. One thing, we currently
    don't have the lastest baselevel for the Bookbuilding tools. But,
    it will be installed shortly.

    Could that be my problem.? If so, sorry to bother you....

    Judy, the text-formatter errors that you have listed in reply 9
    seem to be coming from a corrupted DOC$MESSAGE file. What we need
    to see now is the first part of your log file which states what version
    of DOCUMENT you are running, and the ID of the tag-translator.

    Thanks,

22.11too many index references?CURIE::GERBERGTue Apr 11 1989 15:1416

    It says that I am running DOCUMENT V1.1-P1
    and TAG$TRANSLATESHR, V1.1-P1

    Judy

    p.s. I have been rethinking what I have done to my files since the
    errors have started to appear. All that I can think of is that I
    added many index entries. One suggestion someone gave me was that
    the indexer 'chokes' on index entries that have many page no.
    references to them. I did add entries that probably have many
    references to them but 'many' is a relative term. I don't even think
    each index entry has more than say 5-7 page references to them so..
    could that be the problem??

22.12Yup, its the message file...VAXUUM::THOMASOne L in first, two firsts for restTue Apr 11 1989 16:5417
    Judy, we have discovered that there is an error with the message
    file (DOC$MSG.EXE) file distributed with TAG$TRANSLATESHR V1.1-P1.
    It is for this reason that I needed to know what version you were
    running.

    The V1.1-P1 versions were an interim release for SDMLHELP field-test
    and specialised Bookreader applications. Since a new saveset of the
    Bookreader, compatible with VAX DOCUMENT T1.2, is on its way we
    will not be fixing the V1.1-P1 software.

    The message file errors have been fixed for DOCUMENT T1.2 and higher
    versions. So your best option may be to upgrade to DOCUMENT T1.2 on
    your system.

    I hope this helps.
