4.0. "Screen images in the bookreader" by OROGEN::BODGE (Andy Bodge) Thu Sep 01 1988 17:02

    I experimented some with screen images in bookreader files. The screen
    images are captured by UTOX; UTOX knows how to create bookreader-
    format files. I also used RAGS to annotate screens for the bookreader.

    My experiments and notes on how to do it are in a bookreader file at:

    OROGEN(or ORPHAN)::OROGEN$DUA0:[BODGE.PUBLIC]SCREENS_IN_VOILA.DECW$BOOK

    Caution: read the notes carefully. There are various bugs that must be
    circumvented.

    Andy,

    Could you please process a copy of this for hardcopy and post a
    pointer to it? Not all of us here have DECwindows on our workstations
    (yet) and would like to take a look at the work you've done. Thanks
    for documenting it by the way.

4.2LN03 version availableOROGEN::BODGEAndy BodgeTue Sep 13 1988 12:4626
    An LN03 file is in

    {OROGEN|PAGODA}::OROGEN$DUA0:[BODGE.PUBLIC]SCREENS_IN_VOILA.DECW$BOOK

    The type for the annotations is screen resolution, since the whole
    figure is just a RAGS screen dump (processed through UTOX). An ideal
    system would allow the following:

    	o Type used for annotations appears in laser fonts for hardcopy,
    	  screen fonts for online.

    	o Reduced screens do not lose resolution in hardcopy, even though
    	  they must when displayed on the screen.

    	o All this from one file that is processed as part of DOCUMENT;
    	  that is, I don't have one process for hardcopy screens and
    	  another for online screens.

    Theoretically, RAGS produces a metafile that the Voila bookbuilder uses
    as input. This would allow annotation of screens with laser fonts.
    However, when I tried this with an annotated screen image it didn't
    work, although I didn't pursue the matter. The technology to solve
    these problems exists; it's just a matter of someone deciding it's an
    important problem to solve, designing the solution, and doing it.

You mean SCREENS_IN_VOILA.LN03, right?
4.4This needs to get fixedDECWET::KOSAKYou get what you think aboutThu Sep 15 1988 09:4711
    Thanks for the reply Andy. Sorry to hear the process is not what
    I had imagined. What I want (need) is what you desribe as the ideal
    system. It sure wouldn't be hard to justify if you took a look
    at all the time the CUP Graphic Services artists are spending
    recreating all the screens in RAGS (!). I hope the proper resources
    can be devoted to finding a solution. Time isn't critical for me,
    but those folks have a DECwindows docset due out soon.

    Staying tuned with much interest,

    LN03 is what I meant.

4.6Will be fixed soonDECWET::KOSAKYou get what you think aboutFri Sep 16 1988 16:136
    I've had a chance talk with Jon Parsons about this. It looks like
    we'll be able to do "the right thing" (i.e. scalable bitmaps combined
    with stroked PostScript fonts) when the next release of MOPS comes out.
