183.1 | More about Update Seminar ??? | WARNED::GRAVESG | Geoff Graves,LS(UK);DTN 851 2637 | Fri Sep 22 1995 06:19 | 17 |
| Hi Mel!
Interested to see you are thinking about an Update Seminar for V7.0.
Some questions about this...
Will it cover just OpenVMS Alpha V7.0 as note .0 implies?
Is it intended to be for customers or employees or both?
Will it be along the lines of what Perry Donham did for OpenVMS VAX V6.0?
Is it planned to be available before FRS of V7.0?
Regards,
Geoff
PS: Like the typo in .0 - at least it wasn't "MVS" !

Hi Geoff,
Oh well, never could spell...
The update will cover V7.0 of bot OVMS and Alpha and will also
include SCSI clusters from 6.2. We updated at 6.1 but did not
have an update seminar. Do we need to include anything from
that update in the update seminar...make an inclusive 'point-
to-point' type of document?
We are suggesting that we run a TTT for employees/instructors
in November...one in the US and one in Europe...then the seminar
would be released for customer teaches starting in January...which
means the TTT materials would be available early but not the
finished course.
Will have to go look at what Perry did to answer the last question.
We are working from the Field Test Training materials. I will
also post a note from Nancy Tiernan listing the topics she
entered in the catalogue for the offering.

Hi Mel,
 We are suggesting that we run a TTT for employees/instructors

Could I suggest that for the benefit of those coming from overseas the
V7 TTT in the US be run the week before or the week after the OpenVMS
Partners meeting - this will allow us to get the most bangs for our travel
buck. The Partners meeting is tentatively scheduled for the week of
27th November - the person who would know for sure is Rae (VMSMKT::)
Laflamme who is organising it.
Thanks for reading this,
John

183.8 | Version 7 course material issues | ICS::M_MOREAU | Meg-no-buck$ | Fri Feb 02 1996 13:51 | 52 |
| I'm not sure if this info belongs here or not, but I'm putting it here
cuz I don't know if it justifies it's own note....
EY-T423E-IG (and SG) OpenVMS V7.0 Update Seminar
The cover pages states that this seminar covers the new software features
supported by OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX Version 7.0-EFT1. Should this
really be pointing to Field Test Version if the "real thing" is out there?
It also mentioned on the About This Course first page.
I am happy to see the examples and explanations in this non-pilot of the course
materials.
Course EY-T446E-IG and SG (System and Network Manager I)
I have the same issue with the version showing as Field Test software.
Shouldn't we really have the "VAX F7.0" replaced with just "VAX 7.0"
or am I just nitpicking????
Also, maybe this is presumptuous, since I haven't seen the student kit
completely (just the course guide), but; in the IG on page xxx it says that the
students receive the book OpenVMS VAX Hardware Specific Operations Guide.
They used to get the OpenVMS Managment Essentials.
On page 2-40 there is an example that is used for IF-THEN-ELSE-ENDIF
that I have found entertaining for a couple of years, I don't know if I want
you to change it....
$ INQUIRE NUM_COPY "How many copies do you want?"
$ IF NUM_COPY .LT. 5
$ THEN
$ PRINT/QUE=OFFICE_PRINT MYFILE.TXT
$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT "Your copies are printing in the Office"
$ ELSE
$ PRINT/QUE=LAB_PRINT MYFILE.TXT
$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT "Your copies are printing in the Lab"
$ ENDIF
If you notice you inquire for a number of copies to a symbol but then never use
it! the following piece needs to be added to each print line
/COPIES='NUM_COPY'
But as I said, it's funny to point out in class to system manager types that
you would care what a user wants, but still not allow them to have it their way
at all!!! (I mean that as a joke, certainly not a jab at anyone! ;-)

183.9 | more v7 course "stuff" | ICS::M_MOREAU | Meg-no-buck$ | Fri Feb 02 1996 16:37 | 58 |
| Hi again
I am spending today going over my IG's and making the appropriate page number
corrections to the SG references (since the notes on the IG tend to shift
pages, not an issue to a group that all speaks the same language but a
nightmare when students don't. It's much easier to know the page number in
their guide). It's really not that I have too much free time! These are just
the things I've observed in my quick glances through.
EY-T446E-IG states in Preparing the Systems that it be version 6.0 or higher.
T448E states version 7.0 or higher.
EY-T448E-IG (and SG) OpenVMS System and Network Manager II
Same as last note, stating that OpenVMS VAX Hardware Specific Operations Guide
is the additional documentation - Noted on page xxxii .
page 1-10 doesn't mention the existence of the new 64-bit virtual address
layout that is touted in the V7 update seminar on pages 4-7 and 4-8. It's
listed as a programming feature, but should probably be mentioned in this
course as well.
page 1-14 of the IG and page 1-12 of the SG are dealing with Working Sets.
the IG on page 1-15 shows a UAF record that is not noted as an Instructor Note
and yet is visibly absent from the SG. The SG on page 1-13 has an example of a
SHOW QUEUE/BATCH/FULL command which is also on page 1-17 of IG.
pages 1-35 through 1-39 in IG are not even referenced in the SG. These pages
deal with New Processor Affinity Capability and START/CPU commands.
page 5-15 SG, page 5-16 IG
I don't know if it's me but the assign command lines for SYS$ANNOUNCE looks
like a "cool" idea for syntax, but I have never been able to make it work. Is
it just a personal thing or is there a problem with it??????
EY-U581E-IG (SG) OpenVMS System and Network Manager III
Same as last note, stating that OpenVMS VAX Hardware Specific Operations Guide
is the additional documentation - Noted on page xxxii .
(I guess I understand this same page appears in all the books...anyway it
should be corrected to read the real books they are supposed to get or delete
that line!).
page 1-43 of IG and page 1-39 of SG talk about PAGE and SWAP files. There is
an Instructor Note that says the formula has changed for calculating page file
size on Alpha system in OpenVMS version 7.0. To What???? or where can we find
more info on it ????
page 6-68 of SG and page 6-74 of IG reference a SET ACL/ACL=blah in the
commands summary, but for the life of me I can't find it in the module as being
a command that is taught. It makes sense to teach it, but it's not in the
material as far as I can see.
