180.1 | Put back the basics! | SOAEDS::TRAYSER | Seniority: Big Shovel, Less Breaks! | Wed Feb 08 1995 12:42 | 22 |
| Well, I'm glad this course is being addressed. I'm distressed with what
was taken OUT of the previous course, and the lack of request or
notification to the field that the course was changing.
Basic issue...
Although there seemed to be an overlap between the SysNet string and
the old SysPerf class, the reality is that many of the customers 1) have
not had the formal SysNet string, so they need the background material
that was removed and 2) even the people that took SysNet courses need
the refresher as well as an E X P A N S I O N of the materials that
might have been 'briefly' covered in SysNet.
To properly teach the material (and to make sure the students REALLY
understand it) we must 'recover' and expand on the basics -- what is
paging and how it works, review of the tools, review of Sysgen
parameters, etc.
Best of luck with the re-write!

| There has been a new release of this course. I've ordered it, but
haven't looked closely at it. I don't think it had much V6.x stuff
added beyond what was there, but I can't be sure until I have a chance to
really review the material.
Mark Rine (TEACH::RINE) worked on the course, maybe he can be of some
help.

The update of this course ONLY contained instructor feedback
information. The course will be updated this year to V7.0
which will include the 6.X information.

180.5 | Sigh...better, but still 'broken' (L565 0003) | SOAEDS::TRAYSER | Seniority means a bigger shovel! | Fri Nov 17 1995 14:53 | 31 |
| I just finished a teach with the new course materials...they
are skill "broken". The chapter on Cluster tuning is alomst
useless with all the Monitor commands being ripped out. There
are references like "If you want a fast computer, buy a Cray"!
(paraphrased). YEOW!! Why are we telling people to buy a CRAY
in a course about VAX and ALPHA systems? In the Instructor's
guide that might have been OK, but NOT in the student guide.
Yes, the lastest rewrite of the student guide was a general
improvement. I can teach it with about 6-8 pages copied from
the old course. However, just go ahead and throw out the
Instructor's guide. The new formatting makes it useless to
teach from. The page numbers don't line up with the student's
pages and it is sometimes hard to tell what is an instructor
note and what isn't. There are several pages that have been
added to the new course that say things like "you might need
to increase SPTREQ", but no hints on the instructor's page as
to why or where to find info. Many of the reference materials
listed for the instructor was Digital proprietary or only listed
as being on the Easynet--an considering how much we outsource
the teacher positions, this is crazy!
When it gets rewritten for V7.0 this course MUST get a good
field review and pilot (even if it is an UNFUNDED pilot) so
we can get it back to the quality of the course is was several
years ago (circa 1990).
Buck
P.S. I got good reviews because of what I covered during the
course that was NOT in the materials!

See page 4-7 for the reference to Cray. Not even a useful example.
