VMS courses? Some of them go live with courses on 7/25 and the
instructors want to see the lab guides as well. This is pretty urgent.
THanks!

175.8 | The new Operator course | NYOSS1::MORAN | Ed Moran | Thu Oct 27 1994 09:59 | 41 |
| I am a bit confused and concerned about the origins and evolution
of the new VMS System and Network Node Operations course, which
recently replaced VMS for Operators without, apparently, any
discussion in this Notes conference.
The first mention of the course seems to have been in note 175.0,
which said that EY-Q163E-IG-0002 (Operator) was being updated to
v6.1. There is no mention anywhere of a -0001 (the old VMS for
Operators was a different number, G993E). Was there such a
course? (I don't usually teach this.) I had received a Mail memo
some months back which said that the name of VMS for Operators was
being changed to be more in line with the Sysnet names, and that
the number had to be changed when the name changed. That, and the
mention of "updating for v6.1", hardly prepared me for the
completely rewritten course which now exists, and which I had to
attempt to teach last week.
My description of - and strong objections to - the drastic changes
are in the Operator note (see 117.11). My questions here are:
Whatever happened to curriculum discussions and instructor
reviews? And failing that, whatever happened to at least
notifying instructors that there is a new course?
---------------------------------------
Two other issues:
Why are we still giving out the v5.2 System Managers Manual and
v5.2 Users Manual in a v6.1 course?
Two of my operator students (from the same company) said that they
were in the class because "someone in Digital" told them that
this course was a prerequisite for Sysnet I, II, III. (Even
though I told them that every word in the Student Guide would be
repeated in the Sysnet I or II books, they decided to stay.) I
hope the people in Digital who deal with customers (registration,
sales, whomever) know that this is not true.

175.9 | Notice was sent out in July | TEACH::MARYJO | Maryjo Bader/341-6327/DCO-239 | Tue Nov 01 1994 09:33 | 12 |
| The booklists are being updated as we speak. All of the AA part
numbers totally changed and finding out what the new ones were was not
an easy task. I sent an announcement out about this course to all the
VMS instructors in the US back in July so you might want to review your
mail. I even gave a pointer to the instructor guide so that you could
prep for it.
There are so few people left that I don't believe this notes file is
being used the way it used to be. People don't have the time to read
it anymore. Please bring your concerns directly to me. I am looking
into what can be done with the course.

| re .9
Please do NOT stop using this notes conference for announcements
about OpenVMS courses!
There are instructors *outside the US* who may be missing from various
mailing lists and this conference is the one central source of
information which is available world wide. Learning Services is
(still) a world wide organisation and all instructors need to be kept
aware of corporate activities even though there may be local
adjustments made to course materials.

Mary Jo, I appreciate the time and effort you put into your memos -
they are very valuable, and I know I probably get more useful
information from you than from all the other managers combined. Yes I
received that announcement - that is the one I was referring to in the
2nd paragraph of .8. And yes, I printed out the instructor guide to
prep. Its thinness was what prompted me to start contacting people
with my concerns back at the end of August.

I agree that this conference is not being used the way it used to be,
but I also agree with .10 that we should continue to use it. I had
already used EMail, the telephone, and face-to-face discussions to
report my concerns about this course. I just felt that the information
should also be here for the sake of everyone else. As for people not
having time to read this anymore, I feel that I don't have time not to.
I don't have the time to discover and deal with problems that someone
else might already have encountered. I hope others will continue to
post things here, including instructor comments on teaching
experiences and developer information on revisions and updates.

No reply does not mean "nobody" is using the conference! I for one
rarely replies but constantly check for new stuffs.
Certainly I agree that the developers should continue to post
announcements on availability of new courses and instructors should
share problem experiences as well.
For people who doesn't have the benefit of "phoning" (since for us it
is long distance call) and "face-to-face talk" to the developers, the
conference is the only way we can find info.
RE:-1
I can't find the file neither.

I am looking for the instructor guides for you folks. In general,
once a release has happened, the instructor guides move from
IDC$REVIEW to IDC$INSTRUCTOR_GUIDES...then you can pull the
IGs over from there.
But...it appears that our system manager has deleted the directory.
[sigh]
Let me hunt them down and get them reinstated. I will keep you
posted.
