173.0. "OpenVMS Internals Courses " by SUPER::MARSH (Chocolate - 3 of the 4 necessary food groups) Sat Mar 19 1994 11:45

The OpenVMS Internals courses are in the process of being updated. This
project entails updating to OpenVMS V6.1 both VAX and AXP version of the
course. We will be producing a 2 week OpenVMS VAX Internals course AND a
2 week OpenVMS AXP Internals course.

The courses will be mapped and modularized, sharing information (and
sometimes modules) where possible.

If you have comments on teaches, ideas for labs or in-class demonstrations,
already-worked-out labs or in-class demonstrations please post them here
or contact Fred (SUPER::) Marsh or Dave (SUPER::) Maxwell.

When reviewing the materials we are looking for:

    o Content Review

    o Additional IG items we can put in the course

    o Handouts that can be put on the media tape that are optional
      parts of the course

    o Additional reference documents that will help the instructors
      (If you have any documents, please send them. If you know of
       any documents that would help, let us know so we can try to get them)

    o Additional 'reality-based' information, articles, stories etc that
      will help instructors

173.4Virtual Balance Slot InformationSUPER::MARSHChocolate - 3 of the 4 necessary food groupsMon Mar 21 1994 09:2032
    The VAX scheduling module currently contains a few comments on Virtual
    balance slots. When updating the material I also removed the Vector
    scheduling material.

    Please Note: There are two Virtual balance slot related items in the
                 IDC$REVIEW:[OPENVMS_INTERNALS] directory

         VIRTUAL_BALANCE_SLOTS.PS  - A presentation heavily based on a
                                     DECUS presentation.

         The current purpose of this handout is for instructors to use in
         class if they want but not as a formal part of the class.

         VBAL_DESIGN.PS - The design document for virtual balance slots.

         This is good for reading before you tackle reading the code.

      Please review this material and provide feedback on the following:

      1. What (if anything) should be added to the Virtual balance slot
         presentation material?

      2. Should this presentation be added (after removing the intro parts)
         to the VAX scheduling module as an appendix?

      3. Should the Vector material be added to the scheduling module as an
         an appendix? If not, should it be made available as a separate
          handout like the V. balance slot stuff?

173.6Synchronization modules ready for reviewBROWNY::GDAY::MAXWELLDave MaxwellThu Apr 07 1994 10:3246
    The synchronization module is now available for review.

   It can be found in the directory SUPER::IDC$REVIEW:[OPENVMS_INTERNALS]
   under the name AXP_SYNCH.PS and NEWVAX_SYNCH.PS.

   NOTE: These modules are not common. They have a platform specific piece in the beginning, the rest of the module
         is common information with changes made for implementation (e.g. symbol definitions).
         The instructor notes are included in the PS files. I purposely left the instructor notes in for both platforms.
         I want to hear your reactions. I feel if notes are there about the other platform then when confronted with a
         question it might help. Give me your feelings, also if there are other instructor notes that you have that
         you would like to see included, please forward them along. Thanks

       All materials for AXP Internals I should be in GEL in a few days.

       In the meantime, I have posted the materials in the following
       directory

Directory IDC$REVIEW:[OPENVMS_INTERNALS]

         EY-Q157E-EX-0001.PS   912 blocks

         EY-Q157E-SG-0001.PS  6765 blocks

         EY-Q157E-SL-0001.PS  2552 blocks

         EY-Q157E-TS-0001.PS   106 blocks

      The media save set location is

      Directory SUPER::$1$DUA15:[INTERNALS_SAVESETS]

           ALPHAINT1061.A     142884 blocks

       They should copy the material if they want
       to play it safe. The IG will be the only
       thing available in a few weeks.

173.21Latest released version of Internal II VAX?TIKVAH::ARTHURLampert, Israel Software SupportSun May 28 1995 09:379
I have been asked to teach OpenVMS Internals II in June. The copy of the IG
that I have is dated January 1989, for course number EY-9768E-IB.003.

May I use the version in IDC$REVIEW:[OPENVMS_INTERNALS]? If not, would someone
please post a pointer to the latest version of the course materials that may
be used?

Thank you,
Arthur Lampert

173.23What can I use for a Student Guide?TIKVAH::ARTHURLampert, Israel Software SupportWed May 31 1995 03:0110
Fred,

Ok, but what can I use for a student guide? Can I give them copies of the IG?

I am willing to give them a slightly older version of the SG, and supplement.
But if I give them a SG with a 1989 copyright (which is what we have right
now), they'll stone me!

Thanks,
Arthur

         You should be ordering the new version of the student guide from
         your 'local' learning services printing house.

173.27TNFS training?WARNUT::GRAVESGGeoff Graves,LS(UK);DTN 851 2637Wed Jul 05 1995 08:5111
    Taught the VAX Level2 course last week (first time for a while!)

    A student asked whether there would be any updates to the IO section
    for TNFS. I said "Not on the VAX course, there won't be!". But it
    raised the question of training on TNFS - will there be any updates to
    any courses to reflect this? SYSNET2? Alpha Internals? Any plans on
    this?

    Thanks,

    Geoff
173.28Would something at V7.0 TTT help?GIDDAY::BRODRIBBNot ANOTHER 8200!!!Wed Jul 05 1995 23:2619
    Re: .-1

    G'day Geoff,

    Good questions ... just as important is what is the overall training
    plan for Spiralog, that is, for internal folks as well as customers.
    There will obviously be a significant requirement not only from
    Learning Services but also from CSC, SI, etc.

    Perhaps now is the time to start pushing for something of substance in
    the V7.0 TTT later this year - would be very good timing bearing in
    mind the spread of people at TTT and could lead to update material for
    the courses. You're in the right hemisphere, the right island even, it
    might be worth a call to Clare Wells (DTN 824-3302, 1506413241)
    somewhere north of you?

    Good luck,

    John
173.29Problem accessing IDC$REVIEW:[OPENVMS_INTERNALS]TIKVAH::ARTHURLampert, Israel Software SupportSun Aug 25 1996 04:4412
Maybe because it's a Sunday, but I can't access IDC$REVIEW:[OPENVMS_INTERNALS].

I get:

-RMS-F-DEV, error in device name or inappropriate device type for operation

Would someone please fix this?
