165.1Home-grown labs?SUPER::ROUNDSKristin RoundsTue May 18 1993 11:179
If you would like to contribute any labs you have
developed to use with the SysNet courses, we will
be happy to consider adding them in when we do the
update. Please mail them to SUPER::ROUNDS rather
	than posting them here.

Thanks in advance for your contributions!

165.2Why not post labs here?TEACH::SHERRYSherry Butler - (301)743-7160Tue May 18 1993 14:486
    Kristin,

Wouldn't it be better if they posted them here? Then they could
use each others labs in the mean time.

Hello,

Just a point of interest for all you folks that teach the file system.
I just noticed that V6 VMS added another file to the file system called
SECURITY.SYS with a file id of (10,10,1). That makes 10 files everytime a disk
is initialized rather then 9. INTERESTING. It appears to be involved with some
of the volume level security issues.

165.4TRUCKS::BAKER_SWhat does "ignorant" mean?Wed May 26 1993 12:0729
    Hi Kristin,

I saw .0 and would like some more information on the upcoming course
revisions. The UK are going to introduce the SysNet string soon
(better late than never! :-) ), and I intend to use the V6 material at
    the outset.

Please would you give an indication of the changes that are proposed to
the User and SysNet courses for V6. I believe that the corporate course
numbers (of the SysNet string) are to change, which implies to me that
significant changes are to be made. (But perhaps I'm reading too much into
the number change) Is there a project plan/document somewhere that you
    could point to/post?

I also understand that this revision of the material will also incorporate
OpenVMS AXP information/differences (where relevant). Have I got this
    right? (I hope so).

I believe the DOTES date for the SysNet courses is currently 02 July 93. As
far as you know today, will the materials be ready in this timeframe?

Are there plans to update any of the other courses to V6? If so, what
    and when?

Finally, any news on when review material is likely to be available?

Many thanks in advance for any information.

    Stephen
165.5Update on the updateSUPER::ROUNDSKristin RoundsWed Jun 09 1993 16:1542
We are working hard on updating the SysNet courses at
this moment, and hope to have SN1 in good shape next week.
As chapters are ready, I will post pointers to them.

>>I believe that the corporate course numbers (of the SysNet string)
>>are to change, which implies to me that significant changes are
>>to be made.

	What we are doing:

	- Making sure the code examples look the same under V6,
and to generate new ones where needed.

	- Changing information that is different under V6.

	- Adding new V6 information that is relevant to the tasks
presented in the courses. The really significant changes
to the courses are in the area of security.

>>I also understand that this revision of the material will also incorporate
>>OpenVMS AXP information/differences (where relevant). Have I got this
>>right?

The project plan calls for updating the courses to reflect V6.
Certainly we will need to talk about AXP soon, but V6 is OpenVMS
VAX, not OpenVMS AXP, and AXP is not part of this project.

The strategy is to release an AXP version of these courses in
late Q1. This is based on the limited availablility of OpenVMS
functionality in the early release of AXP (V1.0). As AXP (V1.5)
comes closer to the functionality of OpenVMS VAX V6.0, it makes
more sense to include it in the courses.

>>I believe the DOTES date for the SysNet courses is currently 02 July...
>>will the materials be ready in this timeframe?

	That's what we're shooting for.

>>Are there plans to update any of the other courses to V6?

We hope to update User and the SysNet TBI courses early in Q1.

    Hello,

we are working hard upgrading the local (French) version of the OpenVMS
security management course to V6.0 features.
Are there other developers on the same topic.

165.7Corp. Security Course won't be updated until at least Q2FY94TANG::RHINEJack, OpenVMS Training Product ManagerFri Jul 02 1993 22:225
Due to budget constraints, update of the corporate version of the
security course has not been undertaken in FY93. Due to FY94 budget
issues, this work cannot start until at least Q2. Corporate budgets
are set based on geography requirements and inputs so our hands are
    tied.
165.8updated progress report please...NEURON::MARTINLife is tradeoffsFri Jul 09 1993 13:3611
    Kristin and others,

.5 noted some completed chapters likely in June.

Could we have an update as to that progress, and what it up with

    SN 2, 3 please?

    Thanks,

    - Jim Martin (prepping to teach, might as well do v6 now)

I am adding this note with the hope that it gets more attention
than my VAX Mail and Notes reply under the INTERNALS conference
which have heretofore been ignored. I am trying to locate pointers
to internals level information on changes in VMS V6.0 in order to
update notes for week 1 and 2 of the class. I am also trying to
find out the status of the course update. Please add/copy responses
    to note 109 in SUPER::VMS_INTERNALS.

There was insufficient funding to update the internals courses for
V6.0. There is some internals information in the update seminar, but
not to the level that we know instructors need and students expect.

MCS/SPS is funding the update of the VAX and AXP internals courses to
VAX V6.1 & AXP V2.0. These courses will also be used for customer
training. Understanding the issue that the VAX internals courses have
not been updated in quite some time, Fred and I have been discussing
how we might approach providing changes as we go that will cover V6.0.
This discussion will continue at the end of the month when Fred and I
have both returned from our vacations.

As an aside, I was not aware of the internals notes conference,
otherwise you would have gotten a response form me. I would prefer
that the entire VMS curriculum is discussed in this one notes file.

In view of Jack's comment at the end of 165.12, I've cross-posted this
    from the VMS_INTERNALS_TECHNICAL_OVERVIEW conference.

I tried to open a new topic in this conference (VMS_CURRICULUM), but am
not privileged to do that, so it had to be a reply and this seemed like
as good a place as any!
Mod: Please move it if there is a better location for it :-)

    No entries since October 1991!

If there is anybody out there, please can you help with a couple of
    points?

I'm down to teach EY-A775E for the first time in a few weeks.

    I've found a copy of EY-A775E-SG-0001, dated April 1990.

Is this the latest version? Is there an Instructor Guide still on-line
somewhere? If so, can you post the location please?

    Thanks,

    Geoff Graves

Geoff, A775E has not been updated. We are looking at the ability to
have this seminar updated as part of the internals update, but it is
    not cast in concrete yet.

Okay - so I'll copy my note here. We were told some time ago that
there WOULD be funding for updates to the VAX VMS Internals classes
which have been neglected. Wonder what happened.

Anyway, funding or not, information is needed. Please help us find
    some sources. Thanks.

Hello again. Well, it's almost August, and the only person
responding to this issue has been "TSFOed". I sent mail to
the person I thought was scheduled to do the V6.0 update of
the internals classes and got no response. There must be many
other Internals instructors trying to add detailed V6.0 information
to their notes. What have you found to use as source materials?
Please place pointers in response to this note. I'd love to hear
the current plans for these course updates as well.

Using the Update Seminar materials as a guide, I have listed
topics that an internals instructor might want details on and
the week in which the topic might most directly relate. You
can use this list to respond. Thanks.

I've just has a request from a student about the Internals Technical
Overview course (A775). He attended mine a few months ago and
wants to know if there will be an AXP equivalent. He doesn't want the
detail of the two five-day internals courses.

I told him I doubt it but will ask the question anyway.

In fact, I'll ask two questions!

I know the VAX full internals courses are being updated to V6.0 (V6.1?):
are there any plans to update the 4day overview course and will there
    be an AXP equivalent?

165.19Possibly maybe !!!TANG::RHINEJack, OpenVMS Training Product ManagerThu Jan 06 1994 16:507
Geoff, we have been trying to get a sense of how often the seminar is
taught. I just got information this morning from the US that it
generates a good bit of revenue. I don't have any money to
specifically update this course. However, if we can do it using
modularity from the update of the existing VAX and AXP courses, we
will. We are not ready to make the determination yet.
