88.2It's missing something too!TEACH::SHERRYSherry Butler - DTN 341-6330Tue Jun 18 1991 09:515
    I just copied over this module, and it's missing the Instructor
    pages. Also, the Introduction and Objectives printed on the title
    page.

    Yes, the instructor pages are absent but we've exercise pages as a

    -------------------
    Intro	[N] Line 3: Performance -> performance

    		[N] Line 7: to effectively control system resources ->
    			    to control system resources effectively

    		[T] Line 8: adressing -> addressing
    		    Line 8: faults, and user -> faults, user

    		[T] Line 12: These -> The

    		[T] Line 16: lecture -> lectures

    1-3		[N] Line 3: of the VAX -> of a VAX

    1-4 Line 5: why is FFFFFFFF in italics?
    					   16

    		[N] Line 13: does the CPU really translate the addresses?
    		    Doesn't memory management hardware do that, including
    		    the address arithmetic?

    1-5 Three lines from foot of page. This line is horrid!:

    		    There also pages the VMS system remembers which working
    		    set it belonged to most recently:

    		    How about:

    		    When pages are removed from a working set,
    		    VMS "remembers" the ID of the process that used
    		    those pages most recently.

    		    That sentence is still longer than desirable.

    1-15	[N] The median is defined as:
    		    The midpoint of a series of sorted data. If the
    		    number of data is even then the arithmetic mean
    		    of the central pair of data is taken. In the
    		    latter case, the median does not exist in the data.

    		    Is the median the intended statistic in the context
    		    of working sets? How does a system manager determine
    	            the median?

    		    The median may be as misleading as any measure of
    		    central tendency: standard deviation, arithmetic mean,
    		    mean deviation, geometric mean etc. without some
    		    qualification. This qualification may rest on a
    		    measure of skewness of the data.

    1-17	[O] Bullet 2: sub-bullet 1: modified page and free page
    	            lists                            ----          ----

    				     -              -
    1-26	[T] 1.c. reducing -> reduce

    		[N] 1.g. ascertain your correct calculations ->

Please copy the following file for review of Chapter 15 Performance, (and
Chapter 14 System Monitoring). Sorry, it was originally compiled under DOCUMENT
as a mini-course section; TABLE of CONTENTS, Index, Labs, etc.

The pagination problems, etc., are noted. The last edit was posted in parallel
to reviewing. Isn't that always the way it goes when you try to hurry? Thanks
for the comments.

88.5Thanks; nits; forget the H/W and those numbersDUCK::SHONEKKeith Shone UK Edu 830-4074Thu Jun 20 1991 10:5937
    Firstly another thank you to Paul for posting the new version so quickly.

    (I've done the bit about an index at 87.5!)

    Finally, I'm really only nitpicking in this reply. I've restricted my
    picking to the instructor pages after my review posted at .3.

    Page	Comment
    -------------------
    2-11a	Line 7: objectfiles -> object files

    2-12a	Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Have we any figures other
    		than for the dear ol' 11/780? I know its a benchmark
    		but how old has a bench to be before the marks wear out?

    		Does a system manager REALLY NEED TO KNOW these sorts of
    		number? I believe they're spurious. There is a clear
    		distinction between the two types of page fault, let's
    		leave it there.

    		Five lines from foot: approxiamtely -> approximately

    2-16a	Bullet 1: uses FPL and MPL without predefining them.
    		Could this be done on page 2-12a where the names are
    		used together most recently?

    2-17a	Line 4: invloves -> involves

    2-17b	Liked that first line of the Instructor Tip:
    		"... from an Instructor that you may want to pass along."
    		Will the instructor come head first or feet first?

    2-21a	Please don't refer to the 11/780, if possible. The numbers
    		are difficult to grasp unless put into everyday context.
    		100Hz is twice the refresh rate of a VDU, for example.
    		Better not to mention numbers like these. Ratholes appear
    		from nowhere when discussions get down to number level.

                            Chapter 15
                       Performance Management

2-7 Physical Memory contains three types of page:
You forgot to mention pages that have been modified (MPL)

also you never talk about the FPL or MPL

2-10 I don't think this pase should be here, because there is alot
of other parameters associated with AWSA, and were not specifically
talking about that yet. PFRATH, WSINC,WSDEC,PFRATL ,BORROWLIM and
GROWLIM are all also involved. I understand what point your
trying to make, but its to early to do that.
     This should be further back like around 2-16 or 2-17.

2-16 and 2-17 are the same page. Nevermind there are 2 2-17's both
with different displays.

2-16 Process working set size has to do with AWSA so maybe go more into that
here. Should mention GROWLIM here, you mention BORROWLIM

Also what about why the modified list is written to the pagefile.
FREELIM, FREEGOAL, MPW parameters. I can only assume these are mentioned
somewhere else but I strongly feel they belong here if this is a
performance management chapter specifically dealing with memory. I
would have a real problem if none of that is mentioned here.

2-22 Installing images is good in this chapter.

	Performance  Management
	Chapter 15

Overall comments -Failed to include a page about the free page list and
		the modified page list.
		Maybe a better title would be Memory Management. I think
		performance management include everything where this
		chapter deals only with memory.

Objective	Third bullet Is this really covered in this chapter? You
		only have one display of the monitor utility.

2-10 Please put in the instructors page how to present this
		page.

2-10a You failed to touch on all the parameters listed on the
		student page. Please include the ones missed.

2-11a		Second paragraph, third line
		"objectfiles" needs a space.

2-13 Please put in the instructors page how to present this
		page.

2-15 Maybe list the file name on the disk. Just a thought.

2-16a At the fifth bullet it mentions "$CREPRC" system service.
		What are these?

2-17		Same as page 16.

2-18 Please put some bullets on this page so the instructor
		can make reference to them. Thank you.

2-20 I like this page. Great!

2-22 Please define what each of the qualifiers do.

2-23a You might include just what a global section is and also
		global section count.

2-24a Definitely include what a global section is and also
		how they are used.

2-24 Please explain what the student should be looking for on this
		page.

Thanks for the feedback. I've incorporated most all of your comments.
Sorry about the delay; vacation and Pilots and such.

Added a small piece on setting NETACP quotas.
