Chapter 9 of Sysnet II entitled:
Performing Backups and Restores
is currently being rewritten and should be available for review by
the middle of next week.
I am looking for information that you would like included on the
instructor pages. What types of things do you normally tell your
students that does not appear in the course text?
The current outline for the new backup information is as follows:
Making Backup Copies and Files
Image (full) and incremental backups
Save sets
The Backup Command line
Qualifiers to Backup
Command Procedures (may not be included in this chapter)
Set proper parameters for Backup
Restoring Files
Restoring Files from incremental backups
Listing the contents of a Save set
Comments?
Thanks for the input,
Wendy

82.3 | Looks good; some typos; concern about those .COMs | DUCK::SHONEK | Keith Shone UK Edu 830-4074 | Wed Jun 19 1991 11:54 | 59 |

This module contains much useful information, well organized and,
for me, easily digested. I hasten to add that I'm not a BACKUP
guru and haven't been to the BACKUP docs to verify the legality of
combinations of qualifier and parameter.
I have one serious concern.
On pages 9-10 and 9-11 we provide command procedures for performing
backups. Should such sensitive operations carry a disclaimer on behalf
of Digital? We don't accept responsibility for ... etc
If a customer types in one of these procedures and goofs on one of
the commands, qualifiers or whatever we could look silly.
Just a thought...

9-6a [T] line 2: ont eh -> on the
[T] line 5: nothave -> not have
[T] line 9: imcremental -> incremental
[T] line 15: qulaifier -> qualifier
[T] line 16: inconsistant -> inconsistent
9-6 The bullets under the heading "Image and Incremental
Backups" change from "-" to "o" - has a line been
missed before the bullets that start "-"?
[T] Final bullet: suers -> users (there could be a stink
about that typo!)
[N] next to last line: REPLY/All -> REPLY/ALL
9-8a [T] line 2: save -> saves
[T] penultimate line: magneetic -> magnetic
9-8 [T] line 2: dot he -> do the
[T] bullet 2: teh -> the
Three lines from foot: the font seems extra small for this
command line.
9-9a line 5: delete comma after previous
9-9 [T] Bullet 3: saves -> saved
9-10a BACKUP commands in mid-page: shouldn't the save set names
be different?
9-10 [T] line 3: procedrues -> procedures
9-14 [T] The code example's first command refers to
DRA1: but the callout after the example refers to
DRA2. I think the code example should be:
$ MOUNT /FOREIGN DRA2:

Module 9
Performing Backups and Restores
Overall I thought that this was a pretty good chapter. I like how
there is an appendix on lots of the backup qualifiers. It gets to
be to much when all those are part of the main chapter.
9-8 two typo's. The first sentence (dot he) should be (do the).
The senond bullet (teh) should be (the).
The last sentence on the page-
With this command line, you initialize the tape (with the /REWIND
command) ***--> should be (/REWIND qualifier)
it continues--> and the tape has a volume label of 19JUNE (the first six
charaters of the saveset name.)
-Should you also mention that the backup command mounts the
tape and the label comes from the save set name when it does this.
9-9 You mention the /label= qualifier but it should be discussed
on this page. for example why you need it.
9-10 This is a command procedure for nightly image backups and the explain-
ation says the following command procedure performs nightly image backups,
using DUA):. This procedure will execute daily at 2:00 a.m. (* should
say --> this procedure will execute NIGHTLY at 2:00 a.m.
You also may mention that the procedure is only useful if you r backup
dos'nt take more than 1 tape, otherwise someone will need to be at work
at 2:00 am to change tapes.
If you are doing an image backup of DUA0: chances are it won't fit on
one tape anyway.
9-13 Talk about the /FOREIGN qualifier and why you need it. If we use
qualifiers we should say why.
9-15 Restoring files from an incremental backup.
-Do you really need the /record qualifier on the RESTORE operation?
-Explain why you do the restore in reverse chronological order and
just what the benefit is.
9-16 This is a good example, I'm glad to see it. Maybe tell them why they
need the /incremental qualifier.

Performing Backups and Restores
Chapter 9
Overall - BETTER than the old system management I. I really like
the flow of the topics. Nicely done.
Objectives Good list of objectives. They are truly covered in
this chapter.
9-6a Typo in the first line at the end "ont eh"
Typo in the first line of the second paragraph "nothave"
9-6 Typo at the last bullet "suers"
9-8 Typo on the first line "dot"
Typo at the second bullet "teh"
You may want to show an example using the /LABEL qualifier.
9-10 The directory for step one is incorrect. You have [SYSTEM]
when in fact it should be [SYSMGR].
The tape drive was never mounted within this command
procedure.
9-11 For step one maybe mention they should put this in
SYS$MANAGER directory.
The tape drive was never mounted within this command
procedure.
9-12 For the general format include the many places for
qualifiers.
9-13 After the first bullet there is a sentence that begins
with "The save set ...." Get rid of the last period.
In writing technical journals ,due to syntax, it is
OK to omit it since it could be confused with actual
syntax.
9-16 What a VERY PLEASANT surprise.
This is a real life situation that the customers
must clearly understand.
Check the wording at bullet four. In the command line
PUBLIC is just a label. Maybe reword the sentence at
the bullet.
Also - you have used disk and tape up to this point in
this chapter. It might be a good idea to use the same
with this example.
9-17 Show an example for item number 2. Maybe
$BACKUP/REWIND/LIST MUA0:LYNN.BCK
Appendix Clean up just a little bit. Use names that a person can
easily pronounce and provide spacing between the many
examples. Everything seems to run together.
What about the tables for the qualifiers? Maybe add
them as an appendix. Even though they are not in this
chapter students would have a place for reference.
Maybe add a page on tape label processing and an
appendix for the options of the /IGNORE qualifier.

comments one way or the other about content, style, etc....
Module 4 (Performing Backups & Restores) in SYSNET II
p. 4-11 READALL privilege should be used instead of BYPASS in the
command procedure for nightly incremental backups.

| page 4-9- The command in the center that ends with: /label=219june
This is 7 charactors. labelsa should be 6 or less.
Page 4-11 Remove the word "other" from the first sentence. The
procedure resubmits for every night.
page 4-13 A whole save set would be a good thing here to look at.
Most of the students have not seen one.
Page 4-16 I know there has been a debate on this one. I still
feel that doing an image restore here, it is not needed to do
a /record. Why do it. It shows the last date of the last backup.
(backup meaning "save"?) We do not have a saveset any where that
was done at this time. In the backup/image I would remove
"/record".
