Module: Managing Disk and Tape Volumes

Just done a proof reading exercise with a word by word sanity/sense
   check.

   Seems fine as it is.

To what do the change bars refer? I haven't seen an earlier version
of this text have I (large Woodstockian 'thinks' bubble emerges...
followed by slight colouring of upper-level cheeks...)

Review of chapter

	WORKING WITH QUEUES

Page 1-6: last bullet:
Missing line - Print jobs are created by the PRINT command

Page 1-8a: last line
$INIT/Que etc (TTA1:,TTC7:) device names have a colon!

Page 1-8: same remark.

Page 1-9: LPA0 is a device name colon must be adjusted.

          Number 6: Second command ????

Page 1-10 and 1-10a device names need a colon.

Page 1-14: queue name LPA0 and LPB) needs a colon.

Page 1-16a: Qualfier /BLOCK_SIZE is checking on blocks and not to pages. Not
even if your blocksize equals pagesize is 512 bytes. Then still
your physical pages can be different from your blocksize.
To check this use the following command:
            $ACCOUNT/TYPE=PRINT/REPORT=PAGES/SUMMARY
                                          |
+--- there is the confusing one

Page 1-16: Colon needed by the device names.

Page 1-19: Setting Job Attributes

           Adjusment DELETE/ENTRY ----> DELETE/ENTRY=

So far this chapter.

Review comments for Ch 15. Managing Disks/Tapes

Very good content for the intended audience. Don't forget BACKUP ;-)
I think that (just) enough information should be given to cover the objectives
listed in the SYSNET I Spec.

Stephen
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1-4 RESOURCES. The sentence "To complete..." implies that the manuals
are needed, or else the student won't be able to acheive the
objectives. There may be cases where these manuals are
unavailable during the course. I suggest removing the sentence
and just listing relevant books (as with earlier chapters).

TOPICS, 1st bull	Capitals on public volumes

1-5 Suggest inclusion of "user files" on the public volume list.

1-6a 1st para	Implies that bad block file is not created on DSA disks. It is,
		but it's just not used.

     Last line	STARTUP_V5.COM = SYSTARTUP_V5.COM

1-6, 1st line	Extraneous "the:" on the end.
4th bull	Do we want to mention cluster size here (in this course)?

1-7a Para for callout 4.
Suggest change "(Do not run the BAD utility on a DSA disk)"
to "(You cannot run...". Attempting this gives an error
		message.

1-9 Table.	Disparity between 1st entry (ALLOC) and 2nd (ANALYZE). COuld
mislead students to attempt to ANALYZE a "DU" device (DSA).

Suggest nitty title change for 3rd entry. To "...Disk or Tape"
Makes it consistent with the text.

3rd entry, last para. Use of "current ANSI". What is current?

4th entry. Use of the word "allocates" could cause confusion.

1-10 table	Suggest the layout/format/style of the table be the same as
		the previous one (Table 1-1)

1-11a Missing "<REFERENCE>"

1-11 3rd bull	Bit: Suggest replacing last "volume" with "it"

1-14 Table /PROT entry. Comment text should use R/W/E or Read/Write/Execute
			 throughout. Currently uses both forms.

1-16a 2nd bull	Use of BAD. Should be ANALYZE/MEDIA.

1-16 Table, /GROUP entry 3rd item. Suggest removal of text "because name is
				     in group logical name table"

1-17 Table	Should there be a line under the sentence "To override
		volume.."?

1-18 Chart.	Good/useful flow chart. I feel it would be better placed
earlier in the chapter between 1-10 and 1-11. It could also do
		with an introductory "one-liner".

module 15: Page 1-7 & 1-8 should face each other.

Page 1-9 We need to mention that DSA drives
shouldn't have analyze/media run on it.

                            Module 15

                        Managing Disk and Tape Volumes

1-9 $Analyze/media/exercise device:
*(Mention what types of devices need this utility)
          *(non dsa disks)

    $Mount dua2 Testdisk disk

Mounts Testdisk on the device dua2. *(mounts disk on the device dua2,
because test disk is just a label and can't be used as a device name.
I guess I don't like referring to a device by its label and not logical
    name.)

1-13 Get rid of the Control column

1-18 Change name of figure to
Summary on preparing and using disk or tape volume)
I like this page at the end of the chapter.

I ALSO THINK THAT PAGE 1-18 SHOULD FOLLOW THE EXPLAINATIONS OF THE
COMMANDS. WHEN IT IS THE OTHER WAY, AS IN SYSTEM MANGR. I, WE MUST
EXPLAIN EACH COMMAND AS WE GO THROUGH THIS FLOW, THEN COMES THE
COMMANDS THAT WE MUST NOW GO OVER IN DETAIL. THE WAY YOU HAVE IT
    HERE HELPS IT FLOW BETTER.

	Managing Disk and Tape
	Chapter 15

TOPICS	You have listed:Backing up public and private volume BUT
you never metion this topic at all. Either remove the
topic or include how to do this.

OBJECTIVES	You have listed:Modify the volume information but you
never metion the SET VOLUME command.
Maybe look at the topics and objectives again just to verify
	they truly match the chapter.

1-13	Do we need to list the CONTROL column? For someone just
starting out it is not mentioned as to how it is used by the
system. It is covered in Security so just put it in that
course. In the past it has lead to lost lecture time and
generated some confusion for the beginner.

1-18	Move this page to the beginning of the chapter.
