   Module: Managing System Hardware

My views - not necessarily those of my colleagues.

Some of these comments I've made elsewhere - I think.

   Page Comment

1-6 End of console entry: typo alos -> also

   1-8a	    Line 3: typo length -> lengthy

1-11a Digital Digital Services makes a strange phrase - guess
we have to live with it...

Final paragraph: PM - has it been defined - Post Mortem?
Post Meridian? (sorry our Post Mortem maybe your autopsy!)

1-17 Final line: the SEARCH command is useful too especially
	    using the /WINDOW qualifier

   1-20	    Bullet 1: <Nit> System -> system
	    Bullet 4: sub-bullet 3: typo environement -> environment

Review of chapter:

	MANAGING SYSTEM HARDWARE

Page 1-7a: Mention here the XMI as well.
See reply 62.2 Arnold is already asking it.
Arnold it is the bus for the 6xxx VAX machines.

Page 1-9a: Tell why sometimes the node name, and sometimes there is a number
	   before the disk name.

           systax is nodename$ddcu:
                          |
                          +------ if $MCR SYSGEN
                                       SYSGEN> show alloclass 0
                                  else
                                     the number before $1$ddcu:

Page 1-11a: PM is Preventive Maintenace. What we called the "old" RHM and RHD
	    services.
            RHM ... remote hardware monitoring
            RHD ... remote hardware diagnosis

May be we can tell here something about the product VAXsimplus.
It is a free product and it is so easy to handle. get aaway these
	    difficult and long analyze/error commands.

Page 1-13a: Tell you need CMKRNl privilege to do $ANALYZE/SYSTEM
                                                 $ANALYZE/CRASH
Page 1-14: After the SHOW SYMBOL/ALL typo systemm --> system

Page 1-15a: first line, DIGITAL DIGITAL SERVICES. ??? really this way or do you
mean: Digital Field Service or Digital Customer Service??

Page 1-15 same remark. Digital Diagnosis Service???

Page 1-17 last line. Keith mentioning the search command.
Since VMS V5.0 you can edit the current operator log with the /READ
	  qualfier. This is very powerful.

Page 1-19: UETP. Extra bullet. You have to log in to the SYSTEST account.

Page 1-20: seventh bullet Digital Digital services. This is very digital. See
	   other remarks page 1-15a, 1-15

So another one ready.

    Re 62.2

Arnold DSSI means Digital System Storage Interconnect.

Something to do with micro vax's machines who will have dual ported
disk without using a CI interface, because they don't have a
    CI-controller.

    Bye Arjen.
62.5More about CMKRNLDLO10::TARLINGTue May 21 1991 10:3614

    An observation about note 62.3:

    > Page 1-13a: Tell you need CMKRNl privilege to do $ANALYZE/SYSTEM
    > $ANALYZE/CRASH

This example gives the impression that "CMKRNL" privilege is required
to do "$ ANALYZE/CRASH", this is NOT true. No privilege is required
to do "$ ANALYZE/CRASH", the user need only have "Read" access to the
    dump file.

    Arnold.

Here are my review comments for Ch.11 - Managing System Hardware.
Some items may already have been mentioned by other reviewers.

Generally, a very good introduction to this topic.

Stephen
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1-5a Suggest mentioning more up-to-date CPUs, perhaps listing
their relative power to show how different they can be!

1-6 3rd bull, last sentence
		Typo, alos = also

I/O entry. Suggest specifying disks and tapes also. They're
		pretty important too!.

1-7a Title	I prefer the title "Interconnects (buses)". Personally I never
think of interconnects as devices, and thus I think the title
		is misleading.

Last bull Typo bus-NMI = bus - NMI

1-7 Title	As above
VAXBI entry. Why only "expand" this entry? Could do the same for SCSI
                    XMI as well.

1-8a 2nd para.	Typo: length = lengthy

1-8 1st para.	Missing <REFERENCE>

    Table: Terminal description.
First line says that a terminal typically has a keyboard and
video screen. Fine. The next line just says "hard copy".

Suggest swapping the 2nd and 3rd lines around (ie Hard.. and
Video...) and expand the (new) 3rd line to say "Some terminal
devices produce hardcopy rather than video output")

Nit. "Video - Can..." = "Video - can..."

	   Printer description
Nit: "Letter Quality - High..." = "Letter Quality - high..."

	   Tapes drives description
Nit: "Tape Cartridges" = "Tape cartridges"

1-9 Cluster-format device names are not discussed. I feel that
their format should be mentioned (as we have mentioned the
cluster concept in Ch 10). However, I'm not convinced that a
general discussion of allocation class will be warranted in this
course, but may be hard to avoid if showing the device name
format. (Hows that for indecision? :-))

1-10 Table	Suggest swapping the Function and Command columns around thus
matching the table content with its title.

Nit: Last entry: (You...) = (you) or a full stop after "volume"

1-11a 3rd para Typo: "Digital Digital Services"
4th para Do attempts to write to write-locked devices really cause error
log entries? I've never heard of/seen this, but then I've never
		tried/looked for it.
Last para Suggest replace PM with "Preventive Maintenance check"

1-12 Example	Query usage of EASYnet nodename in "public" doc'n. Is this
allowed? Are there any policy issues?

1-13 2nd sent.	Suggest qualifying the statement thus: " The VMS system saves a
copy of memory in a dump file called SYS$SYSTEM:SYSDUMP.DMP
		when an unrecoverable error occured"

1-14 Sentence Nits: Suggest "..overwrites dump.." = "overwrites the dump.."
and "..part of startup.." = "..part of the site-specific
		       startup.."

1-15 1st sent	"Digital Digital Services"!
     2nd bull	Extraneous ";"
     3rd bull "Digital Digital Services"
The Note	Use of "Field Service engineer". Suggest "Customer Service.."
		or "Digital Service.."

1-16a The note Use of "Field Service" again

1-16 2nd bull	Have you ever tried removing RA8ns, RA9ns etc? :-) Visions
of customers getting their spanners/wrenches out :-)

1-17a Penultimate para
As of 5.something, you don't need to close the current log
		file to view it.

Last para: Mentions ERRORLOG.OLD. Where did this come from? Should it
		be ERRLOG.SYS?
Last line: Should OPERATOR.LOG really be ERRLOG.SYS?

1-17 To successfully issue REPLY/LOG the terminal must be enabled as
an operator terminal. There has been no mention of REPLY/ENABLE
		yet.

1-18 Again, query use of EASYnet nodenames in examples.
62.7CMKRNL versus SDANWGEDU::WIERSMADrive a BENTLEY or walk...Wed May 22 1991 16:5928
    Re 62.5

    Hello Arnold,

In principle your rigth, but let's what the manual told us.
    Manual used:
Programming, Volume 7B, VMS System Dump Analyzer Utility Manual, Page
    SDA-32:

$ ANALYZE/CRASH_DUMP filespec (most of the time SYS$SYSTEM:SYSDUMP.DMP)

To analyze a crash dump, your process must have the privileges
necessary for reading the dump file. This usually requires system
privilege (SYSPRV), but your system manger can, if necessary, allow
less privileged process to read the dump files. Your process needs
CMKRNL privilege to release page file dump blocks, whether you use the
/RELEASE qualifier or the SDA COPY command.

I hope this will clear the confusion a little bit.

    With kindly regards,

    Arjen.

PS: Arnold, I will send you a briefly overview of DSSI if you want to?
Let me know by sending me mail.

         		    Page 1-7 Add DSSI bus.

Page 1-8.a Change word "length" to "lengthy".

Page 1-9 Show reference to device list in
         		    system manager manual, page ___

Page 1-12 Give an explanation of entry 17 & 18.

Page 1-13.a How about some help here. At least
explain the system parameters in detail. Also
where is this taught in detail for the students.

         		    Page 1-14.a Please explain "/index=nn".

         		    Page 1-15 & 15.a "Digital digital services"??
How about "Digital Field services", "Digital
         		    customer services" oe "Digital's digital
         		    services."

Page 1-18 Move page to left. It runs off
         		    the page to the right.

Page 1-19 I know that UETP is not a diagnostic.
I thought it WAS an exerciser. It puts a load
on VMS by exercising most functions.

                   Managing System Hardware

1-6 Console
. The console storage device is either a disk or tape drive from which
information can be sent or recieved from the system.
*(Maybe mention what kind of info, it sounds as if you could back up
to this drive. Explain what its for.)

1-7 You mention alot of buses, maybe mention a couple differences between
the buses and examples of what type of VAX uses each bus.

1-17 Also you may want to mention that the log file contains mount requests.

The following are comments on Module 11 Managing System hardware.

Page 1-19.	we should explain uetp in a little more detail, such as
that we would run it from the systest account, and possibly
include some of the examples from system manager II that show
uetp being run through the different phases and on specific
		devices.

	Managing System Hardware
	     Chapter 11

Overall:	Remove pages 1-9 and 1-10 They are in SYSNET II (Ch. 7) at the
best location and covered completly. Remember the
purpose of the new courses is to do away with redundancy.
After you remove pages 1-9 and 1-10 readjust the objectives.

1-8	I like this page. Brief but it gets the job done.

1-10	The fifth function in table 1-4 is not exactly true. It only
names all open files on a volume in a cluster environment if
you are in SYSMAN and have set your environment to cluster.

1-12	First line "Use the the"
For table 1-6 maybe include some examples for syntax purposes.

1-15a	First line "Digtial Digital"

1-15	First line "Digital Digital"
Sentence after the first bullet doesn't need a coma.

1-18	I like this page. They need to see what is in the operator log
	file.
