52.1A Look at Chapter 1DLO10::TARLINGWed May 08 1991 11:0112
    Val, Kristin;

    A quick look at chapter 1:

    1. Page 1-4a, second paragraph second sentence, "aonly", typo.
    2. I like the objectives.
    3. I find this chapter a significant improvement over previous
       materials for the same subject matter. The material is up to
       date and accurate.

    Arnold.

   Module: Logging In and Out of a VMS System

   My views - not necessarily those of my colleagues.

   Some of these comments I've made elsewhere - I think.

   General:
	Still rather uneasy about the quantity of information
	on servers - too much. For example, do we need to
	discuss forward switch characters?

	That said, I've grown to like this module (how perverse
	can I get!). The flow and evolution is good.

   Page	    Comment
   1-4a	    Line 3: typo - ellaborate -> elaborate
	    Line 5: typo - aonly ?

   1-5a	    Line 2: typo - refered -> referred

   1-6 Text looks dense on this page - could sub-bullets
	    be used? For example:

	    o Each user of a VMS system has an entry in the
	      User Authorization File (UAF)

		- entry usually made by system manager
		- provides user name and password

	    o when user name and password match those in the UAF
	      entry:
		- system creates an interactive process for that
	          user
		- displays informational messages
		- displays prompt - by default "$"

	    Just an idea - please shoot to pieces as desired!

	    (Watch specifying $ prompts since a LOGIN.COM may
	     establish a special one).

	    Pedantic - I prefer the word entry when referring to
	    the UAF since a record smacks of a single line of
	    info. (Ignore me, I'll probably go away...)

   1-7a Last line: typo AUF -> UAF (could it be a German
	    authorization file ;-) )

   1-7	    <Nit> a Sample UAF Record -> A Sample UAF Record

   1-9 Doesn't need a table for these actions, just a
	    straight numbered list

   1-11a Line 4: typo "...you rown..." -> "...your own..."

   1-17a    Line 3: typo explan -> explain

   1-21a    Line 3: typo expirations -> expiration
	    Line 5: typo infromation -> information

   1-23	    Bullet 3: sub-bullet 1: password length is server-dependent
	    - the one I'm on only allows six characters.

   1-25	    Bullet 3: <Nit> system -> System

This is the review of chapter:

	Logging In and Out of a VMS System

Page 1-7: Make a simple user record.
	  This one has to many questions inside.

	  Leave the flags away (diswelcome, disnewmail)
          Ownerfield: Mary Smith --> if uppercase, so confused with the username
          Authorized and Default Privileges not the same.
          The following is an alternative.

Page 1-10a: second bullet: to any system
          This is only true if you don't have fixed ports or dedicated
	  services.

Page 1-11 In this case "CD" is a service .........
           May be you can show this in the example.

           Local> SHOW SERVICE CD

Page 1-12a: On the instructor page there are no comments.
            May be this will help.

            Two system parameters very important:

            TTY_TIMEOUT      default 900 sec (15 min)
                * period how long a disconnected process will wait.
            TTY_DEFCHAR2
                * must have the value of %X20000 (decimal 131072)
                  default %x1002  (decimal 4098)

            $set terminal/disconnect 'device name'

            $mcr sysgen
            sysgen> connect vta0:/noadaptor/driver=ttdriver

Page 1-17a: fourth bullet: sysgen has no /OUTPUT qualifier.
            What about: $MCR SYSGEN
                        SYSGEN> SET /OUTPUT=filespec

Page 1-18a: Mention also SYS$PASSWORD_HISTORY_LIFETIME n  days

            And the /FLAG=DISPWDHIST (sixth -)

Page 1-19: Fourth example Tell also how to stop this verification.
           Because maybe of a typo error, you really don't know the password
	   anymore.

Page 1-20: Last line.
           Enter the NEW----> Enter the Verification password again.

Page 1-23a: What if the user forgets his lock password?
            Happens twice already in a Syst Mgt Course I had to run.

Page 1-24a: fifth line Format.....
            D HH:MM:SS.hh------->  DD-MMM-YYYY:HH:MM:SS.hh

This is a really good chapter.

         	Module 1: I would like to add the /nocommand
                            qualifier here. It is early but where
         		    better, except in the command procedure
         		    section. Your choice.
52.5More comments from DCTEACH::RINEWed Jun 05 1991 14:4912
The following are comments on Module 1 Logging in and out of a VMS System

Page 1-9. Should probably have an example of someone logging in with a
		secondary password.

Page 1-10. 3rd Bullet says a service can provide you access to file
		storage. Can this really be set up with out first accessing
		the computer system ?

Page 1-19.	1st Bullet. "User input is" should probably be replaced with
		"Passwords are"

    We are in the process of running a pilot teach of this class this
    week, and I am sitting in on it, so this is the first time I have been
    in one place long enough to look at the book.

    General comment from students: too much material, taking too much time
    to cover before they get a chance to do anything.

    Specific comment from me: The example of setting a forward switch,
    p. 1-24, shows using a ^X. Could we possibly change this with a
    character that VMS doesn't use? Using this kills the ability to dump
    the typeahead buffer.
