490.0. "Backup process seems longer" by CURRNT::POWELL (Don't follow me - I'm a Lemming) Fri Jun 25 1993 01:39

    I wanted to get some work done this evening on FUTURS but the backup
    appears to be only half-way through.

    Whenever I've wanted to work late on a backup night, I would normally
    expect a fully booted system by at least 10:00. What, if anything, has
    changed?

    David.

490.1Sorry, but this has been like this for a long time...HEWIE::RUSSELLI'm not a free man, I'm a QS-PRMU9-04.Wed Jul 07 1993 11:1323
David, the backup process has been unchanged for several months.

See note 480.6 for details from Keith, from last summer.

The important data is:

>The backups currently run from:

> 17:30 until 07:30 the following day on CURRNT (average)
> 17:30 until 07:30 the following day on FUTURS (average)
> 17:30 until 05:30 the following day on PASTIT (average)

So, when a system goes down for backups it is unavailable until the
next morning.

If you (or your group) wish to fund weekend backups, I know several
ops staff who would be happy to do it. At the right price...

But then of course, people who use the machines at weekends would lost
time as well.

The point is, the backups appear to be taking longer. Infrequently is currnt
in a fit state for use first thing in the morning, it didn't reappear after the
last backup until lunch time.

We should get some guarantees as to what time a machine will be up. Then when
they fail : we fine them. This would soon get us enough money to fund weekend
backups.

Mark.
