As you know, we are about to upgrade the hardware of the main clusters.
This work will be performed during the day, and consists of the following
1) FUTURS will be upgraded from 2 x 6420 to 1 x 6610 and 1 x 6420.
2) CURRNT will be upgraded in two stages:
i) from 1 x 6340 and 1 x 8700 to 1 x 6420 and 1 x 6340
ii) to 1 x 6610 and 1 x 6420 (after the VMS V5.5-1 upgrade)
After the new hardware is commissioned and tested, one node will
be removed from the cluster, and the new hardware will then be
brought on-line.
PASTIT is not being altered.
There will be a minimal impact; people logged onto the node being removed
will have to log out, and the cluster will run on a single node for a
few minutes while the new hardware is plumbed in.
Advance notice of this will be given, to minimise any impacts.
We will be able to introduce the new hardware more quickly by doing this
than by relying on out-of-hours working.

For your info, here are the respective power ratings of the systems:
8700 - 6 vups
6340 - 15
6420 - 13
6610 - 32
So FUTURS is going from 26 to 45, and CURRNT is going from 21 to 45 vups.

The 8700 will be replaced by a 6000-420, starting at 1:00 pm
today. Please log out of YARD before 1:00 pm, and do not
any large batch jobs on YARD that may still be running at 1:00
INCH will not be affected. YARD will return as a 6000-420.

INCH (the 6000-340) will be replaced with a 6000-610 on Thursday lunchtime. Please log off when you go to lunch, and don't kick off any large batch jobs on it. YARD will be up during all this time. When it comes back, FUTURS and CURRNT will have the same horsepower. Peter. | |||||
