468.0. "CURRNT/FUTURS BACKUPS" by NEWOA::CAITHNESS_C (Colin Caithness @NEW, 774-6018) Mon Apr 06 1992 16:42

I believe there was a disk problem on FUTURS over the week-end, resulting
in the loss of all work on DISK$DATA1 last Friday.

This is the second time in two/three weeks that we've lost a days work on
FUTURS.

Can some-one tell me what the backup schedule is for CURRNT and FUTURS?

Colin.

Colin,

we do full backups once a fortnight, and incrementals on a daily basis.

So, we do a backup on Monday morning to TA90 of everything modified
since the previous Thursday.

In this case, the disk went out to lunch on Saturday Morning.....

On one level, we were lucky that Field Service were in that day (working on
a different system), and the engineer realised we had this fault.

Although he would have been quite entitled to go home, (as he wasn't
on site to look at FUTURS), he replaced the HDA that day. This allowed
Ops to restore the Thursday night backup quickly on Monday morning, and
so minimise downtime.

Unfortunately it is a fact of life that hardware does break from time
to time. We balance the cost of recovery against the cost of prevention.

At the moment, it isn't considered cost-effective to shadow all of our disks.

If you can come up with a justification, I'd be glad to hear it, as I haven't
been able to yet....

Peter.
