DECstep
Products for the July/August
1992 Release
November 1991
This document describes the DECstep Products for the
Applications Production Standard Environment Platform
Software Version: DECstep Version 3.0
Digital Internal Use Only
ii
Chapter__1______________________________________________________
Proposed Products for the July/August 1992 Migration
The following tables show the Layered Products, Internal
Tools, changes to versions, products included for the
first time, and products no longer included in the DECstep
Applications Production Standard Environment Platform.
At the request of Paul Antonescu @GEO, the Applications
Production Standard Environment Platform will be NAS 300
compliant and therefore contain the products defined for NAS
200 and NAS 300.
We are also considering the inclusion of a diagnostic/dump-
file analysis/ workload analysis and reporting tool called
RPM (Remote Performance Monitoring) which would exist as
client software on each DECstep node, reporting to a central
node in Galway, Ireland.
The RPM software assists with assessing the qual-
ity/reliability of VAX hardware and software, and performs
dump file analysis and recommends a solution if known.
At the moment we have kept the list to products that we know
are due to ship in the next month or are already out, but
we are aware of the following information - do you have any
feedback ?
Here are the current product/version issues as I see them ...
1. VMS V5.5 will need to be sourced in time for the kit
building
2. DEC Defrag will be released at the same time as VMS V5.5
3. Rdb/VMS V4.1 is currently scheduled for Mar-92 - this is
too late for inclusion into the July/August 1992 release.
Proposed Products for the July/August 1992 Migration 1-1
4. DBMS V4.3 is currently scheduled for Feb-92 - this is too
late for inclusion into the July/August 1992 release.
5. CDD/Repository V5.0 is currently scheduled for Dec-91.
6. VTX V5.0 is currently scheduled for Dec-91
7. DECwrite V2.0 is currently scheduled for Jan-92.
8. DECps - the successor to VPA, SPM and DECcp is currently
scheduled for Jan-92. If DECps is to be used, then I
suggest that VPA, SPM and DECcp be removed for July/August
1992.
9. The November 1991 CONDIST contents listing shows that LMF
V1.1 will be available. I do not now if this is bundled
with VMS V5.5. It could be installed seperately. I do not
have anymore information on LMF V1.1 at present. The may
be the new user-based licensing.
10.Remove PM (Software Project Manager)?
11.I am still investigating the Internal Tools - although
Richard Turner told me last week, that IDC is probably not
used internally, so could be removed. You will see from
the tables below that IDC is shown as removed.
The items marked below with an asterisk, indicate that these
products have issues around availbility, etc., as mentioned
in the section above.
Table 1-1 shows a Summary of Changes to the Application
Production Standard Environment Platform for the July-August
1992 release.

446.2 | | CRATE::BARKER | Now @NEW, ex. RYO,UCG,SBP,RES & REO | Fri Nov 08 1991 14:46 | 15 |
| The last table in the July 92 migration document lists
"Product to be considered for removal after July - August 1992 Migration"
Included in this list are these little used products...
BASIC
COBOL
Pascal
VAXC
I'm sure there is a sensible explanation
Chris
|
446.3 | Should the compilers be there.... | HEWIE::RUSSELL | Hari Krishna, Hari Ramsden, Hari Hari | Fri Nov 08 1991 16:08 | 27 |
| on the production kits?
Since we don't ship sources, should the production sites have the overhead
of the language compilers, and so on.?
Bear in mind the EASE kit is growing in size; it no longer fits on an RF71,
and an RA81 is *really* tight - the smallest real disk is now an RF72 or
RA82.
The platforms group aren't sure, which is why they asked the question.
I guess the questions to be asked are:
1) Do we need them installed for any development reasons?
2) Do we need them installed for support reasons?
3) Does the field need them installed for any of their own reasons?
We can only answer 1 & 2. But if the answer to any of them is "Yes", then
the compilers stay in the kit.
Obviously we would still have the compilers installed on *our* systems,
regardless...
Peter.
|
446.4 | Yes - provisional | CRATE::WATSON | Rik Watson | Fri Nov 08 1991 17:50 | 3 |
| I would have thought that it's nice to have them installed for support
so you can compile / link / debug on the target machine. Otherwise
you'll be throwing .obj's all around the place.
|
446.5 | Any more views? | HEWIE::RUSSELL | Hari Krishna, Hari Ramsden, Hari Hari | Sun Nov 10 1991 16:29 | 10 |
| re .4;
yes, I appreciate that - but should you be putting sources onto target
machines? You then have to remember to clean them up...., and if you do
make changes, pul lthe cource back to update libraries, etc....
I'm not certain how support works these days . . but as I said,
if we need 'em, we'll get them.
Peter.
|
446.6 | | CHEST::BARKER | Now @NEW, ex. RYO,UCG,SBP,RES & REO | Mon Nov 11 1991 11:14 | 11 |
| re .3
Presumably, even if the languages are removed from the DecStep
distribution, the versions used for development will still be
inextricably linked into the DECStep migrations.
If not, we will be back to the bad old days that lead to EASE being
introduced in the first place.
Chris

446.7 | | SBPEXE::CHAMBERS | Mark Chambers | Mon Nov 11 1991 13:50 | 3 |

446.8 | RALLY Version ? | SED750::CLARKE | | Mon Nov 11 1991 17:51 | 2 |
| RALLY V3.0 - the one that will run on MS-DOS and UNIX is going into
field test v.shortly, any chance that V3.0 not V2.3 could be used ??
|
446.9 | ``But it works in Portugal'' | CHEST::WATSON | Rik Watson | Tue Nov 12 1991 08:36 | 6 |
| But what if the subsids have different version of the compilers on
their systems (= different version of the bugs). Then the .OBJ's will
be different and hence the .EXE's
I'd vote for keeping the languages. It would only take one minor
compiler bug the send us running after our own tails for weeks...
|
446.10 | | BACK::haycox | Ian | Tue Nov 12 1991 10:24 | 8 |
| > But what if the subsids have different version of the compilers on

> be different and hence the .EXE's
Surely this is an argument for only development to have the latest 'bug free'
compilers.
Ian.
|
446.11 | Rally V3.0 will be too late. | HEWIE::RUSSELL | Hari Krishna, Hari Ramsden, Hari Hari | Tue Nov 12 1991 10:51 | 7 |
| Rally V3.0 isn't due to ship in Europe until 28-Feb-92, so it's almost
certainly too late for the window.
This is for both the VMS and MS-DOS version. Rally for Unix isn't
mentioned in the list I've seen.
Peter.

Does this mean that you ship source code?
|
446.13 | EBD? | FUTURS::BATEMAN | If you can't stand the heat ... | Tue Dec 03 1991 21:59 | 11 |
| Okay ...
What about Electronic Business Documents (EBD or whatever it's
being called) which should be released as a layered product in Q3FY92?
There is a lot of mis-understanding about EARS verses EBD from within
the Business - it would be nice to see this as an associated EASE
product (as per ALL-IN-1) ....
Chris.
|
446.14 | Gimme the details.... | HEWIE::RUSSELL | Hari Krishna, Hari Ramsden, Hari Hari | Thu Dec 05 1991 11:15 | 10 |
| and I'll push it through the system.
If it ships from ESSB in Q3, then it's eligible for inclusion in DECstep V4.0,
(aka EASE V?.?) for Jan '93.
If there are any pre-requisites, or restrictions, let me know, as it will
save time. The latest list for Jul '93 has just been published; I'll
post it here later today when I get it.
Peter.

Products for the July/August 1992 Migration
A.1 Introduction
LATmaster is no longer shown as included in the following
tables, as this product is now bundled with VMS V5.5.
This platform includes an updated version of the License
Management Facility - LMF.
LMF V1.1 implements user-based licensing.
DECcp, SPM and VPA are no longer included in the DECstep
platforms as they have been replaced by DECperformance
Solution (DECps).
Products shown as removed (DECcp, NMAIL, SPM, VPA) will be
provided on the DECstep CDROM distribution media so that the
local site may install such products as a post-installation
task after the DECstep platform installation.
Please note that VPA does not work on systems with DECwindows
MOTIF.
At the request of Paul Antonescu @GEO, the Applications
Production Standard Environment Platform will be NAS 300
compliant and therefore contain the products defined for NAS
200 and NAS 300.
We are also considering the inclusion of a diagnostic/dump-
file analysis/workload analysis and reporting tool called RPM
(Remote Performance Monitoring) which would exist as client
software on each DECstep node, reporting to a central node in
Galway, Ireland.
Products for the July/August 1992 Migration A-1
The RPM software assists with assessing the qual-
ity/reliability of VAX hardware and software, and performs
dump file analysis and recommends a solution if known.
The following tables show the Layered Products, Internal
Tools, changes to versions, products included for the
first time, and products no longer included in the DECstep
Applications Production Standard Environment Platform.
Table A-1 shows a Summary of Changes to the Application
Production Standard Environment Platform for the July-August
1992 release.

>If it ships from ESSB in Q3, then it's eligible for inclusion in DECstep V4.0,
>(aka EASE V?.?) for Jan '93.
At the last rename (if I'm still up-to-date!!!) EBD was called
TEAMrouter and is due out February timeframe, with the rest of the
TEAMlinks software.
From the UK country standpoint, I'll be asking for these to be included
in the Migration list for January 93.

446.17 | EASE/VMS V5.5 Upgrade on ADGTST (ADGT01,ADGT02) | CURRNT::DAW | Pizzazz-man | Fri Feb 28 1992 10:30 | 52 |
| Hi Folks,
Believe it or not it's that time again. The process of submitting kits
to release management has now changed with the use of AUTOR, so
hopefully we have a little more time than usual at the end of this
period for getting changed kits ready, but I'm afraid we have some
tight deadlines at the start.
Below is a schedule which you will want to incorporate into your
project plans. All applications must be installed and tested on the
test machine prior to the upgrade to VMS V5.5. This can be done anytime
from now until 6th March. Please ensure that your applications are
checked. If your application will require integrated testing with other
applications, please ensure that the data on the system is consistent
with the data that the other applications will be using.
As in the past, development testing (development tools, kit builds,
etc...) will take place on FUTURS when it is upgraded.
The migration list of products is available from the July/August EASE
migration notes conference: EASE::JULY1992. EASE V5.5 documentation is
available from EASE""::JULY1992:[DOCS]
I would be grateful if all EPMs/Team Leaders/Delegated EASE
representatives would reply with details of the applications and
versions they will be EASE testing.
If you have any problems or questions, please let me know as soon as
possible.
Regards,
Rob
EASE V5.5 testing Schedule Duration Ending
Application installations 6th March
Upgrade of ADGTST to EASE V5.5 1 week 13th March
Individual Application Testing 1 week 20th March
Integrated Testing 2 weeks 3rd April
New installation and Upgrade Tests 1 week 10th April
Migration kits build and test 9 weeks 12th June
(Final date for submission to
Release Management)
AUTOR is available on ADGTST and CURRNT. The version on CURRNT is DEC
Standard 095 compliant. Both versions send the AUTOR logs direct to RM.

446.18 | Project Impact Statements | CURRNT::DAW | Pizzazz-man | Mon Mar 02 1992 15:40 | 35 |
|
Hi All,
I need the application impacts by April, 2nd so that the decision
to go or not can be made as early as possible.
As last time, all migration kits must be with Release Management no
later than June 12th.
The January '92 migration was again noticeable by the number of
a) missing impacts
b) missing kits
c) kits released and then withdrawn
d) kits released without warning.
The field were somewhat confused by some of the above. It is crucial
to allow a smooth migration that the correct information regarding the
migration kits is distributed. Hopefully the new application notes
conference will assist in this.
If you are finding that you are recieving insufficient support and help
from your management or project teams, please let Peter Russell know as
soon as possible so it can be escalated through the appropriate
channels.
The migration to VMS V5.5 is potentially the largest for some time;
the new print/batch subsystem is a significant change.
Please ensure all your project teams complete their testing and have
produced impacts *with reasonable estimates for effort required* no
later than 2nd April.
Regards,
Rob

446.19 | ADGTST Unavailability from Thursday | CURRNT::DAW | Pizzazz-man | Tue Mar 03 1992 18:17 | 13 |

Hi All,
Due to critical requirements of a "Revenue Generating" project, the
ADGTST cluster (ADGT01 and ADGT02) will be unavailable for one week,
commencing 10.30 a.m. on Thursday (5th March). The system should be
available again on the 13th March.
Apologies for the disruption to the scheduled installations.
Regards,
Rob
