| EASE V5.3-2 has been installed on FUTURS - here's statement of
events that should happen if you want to preserve your data.
1) Before any upgrade of these layered products you should backup the
data using the utility provided by the layered product.
e.g. RMU/BACKUP database
2) RDO> export database
3) EASE upgrade changes RDB/DBMS/CDD versions
4) RDO> import database - this must also be done for every CDD/PLUS
dictionary database in use, and you'll probably need privs such as
BYPASS to do it.
5) For CDD/PLUS upgrades, the dictionary databases might have to be
exported before the upgrade then imported after the upgrade. You
will probably also have to -
CDO> verify/rebuild_directory
but ALWAYS check the installation guide.
These must be done for any EASE upgrade that includes an Rdb and/or
CDD/PLUS upgrade.
A similar process (DBO/unload,DBO/load) applies to DBMS.
If you have forgotten to export/import (or unload/load) your
databases and dictionaries, rmu/convert (RDB) or dbo/convert (DBMS)
can usually convert a database file structure from the immediately
prior version to the current version. It is never guaranteed to work
over more than one version, and the utility has been known to fail in
the past.
If convert fails, you must either build and load databases and
dictionaries from scratch, or restore earlier software versions, then
redo the upgrade as above. The only safe way of doing this would be to
freeze all development work, re-install the old EASE disk, capture the
old data properly, redo the upgrade again, and convert again.
Now the disclaimer. All the instructions above are my interpretation of
the release notes and installation guides for CDD,CDD/Plus,RDB and
DBMS. The guides are less than straightforward and I may have got it
wrong. I strongly suggest you read the guides for yourself as a check.
It may also be necessary to update your product knowledge through training
courses. Check the latest training catalogue.
Finally, if I have got the instructions wrong, please enter a reply.
