372.0. "PASTIT cluster hardware problems" by NECK::THOMPSON (Jerry Thompson @SBP 782-2554) Tue Aug 07 1990 12:33

	VULCAN has crashed the PASTIT cluster at least 3 times over the last few
days and it's not clear (yet) exactly why? Threatening it with a banana has so
far not influenced its behaviour so IS will be rearranging the clusters should
it crash again, to find out if it's hardware or software that's causing the
problem.

	At the next crash, VULCAN will be removed to the field service house
of correction. YARD will then be taken out of the CURRNT cluster and rebooted
into PASTIT as a temporary measure.

	If this happens, CURRNT will be struggling to provide a service so
please avoid games, notes (unless work related) ,spawning multiple
processes etc. Remember that IS system managers wield the armoured banana to
great effect when under pressure.

    Could you let us know when this impending surgery is about to happen...

    Preferably with some sort of advance notice !

    Thanks.

Boy, can our consultants predict crashes now? Wonderful.
372.3PASTIT shutdown tonightNECK::THOMPSONJerry Thompson @SBP 782-2554Tue Aug 07 1990 16:116
	It looks as though file fragmentation on the system disk is causing
the crashes. IS will therefore be taking PASTIT down tonight (07-Aug) at 18:00
to make the system disk file system contiguous. Should be down for about 2-3
hours.

	Please contact IS on 2020 if this will cause a problem for you.
372.4PASTIT or perhaps HADIT ?HEAD::DAWJust like Indiana Jones, He's back!Thu Aug 30 1990 18:348
    There still seem to be problems with PASTIT: Not being up next day
    after backups, up and down when it feels like !

    Are the problems still being looked into ?

    Can anyone let me borrow an axe ?

    VULCAN - service currently unavailable !

    I know you know, but someone's loaned me an axe - so PASTIT had better
    run and hide !

372.6That old black magic...CURRNT::DAVIESClose, but no banana.Mon Sep 03 1990 09:5314
    Just to put you in the picture:

    PASTIT is currently being looked at by RDC, Local IS, Field Service
    and System Management.

    None of the above have come up with anything at the moment. Due to the
    importance of PASTIT to support we in the Consultants/System Management
    area are looking for a different solution - possibly swapping some
    hardware around to eliminate whether its a H/W or S/W problem.

    Stay tuned...

    	Keith.

372.9Software upgrade should fix it...CURRNT::RUSSELLMiddle-aged Mutant Hero Turtle (UK option)Fri Sep 21 1990 10:3716
    Just to bring everyone up to date;

    the latest concensus of opinion is that the problem is not hardware,
    but actually software, and is related to having small page and swap
    files on the system disk.

    The cure is to upgrade to EASE V5.3 (which we wanted to do three weeks
    ago); but due to I.S. resource constraints, quarter end, etc, this
    won't happen until the first week of October, after the full backups
    have been taken.

    So, plan to be without it for approx half a day or so, and let's hope
    this solves the problem once and for all.

    Peter.

    The actual date for the upgrade is Thursday, October 4th.
