318.0. "Major DNS Name Changes" by NECK::THOMPSON (Jerry Thompson (7)781-4421) Tue Feb 13 1990 09:00

The DNS Namespace that we use is going through a mid-life crisis. The DNS
powers that be have decreed that the Functional Branch of the namespace is
to be lopped off in favour of the Geographic Branch. This is rather sad as
ADG has slotted rather nicely into the Functional Branch until now.

So,
	here is a gale warning for DNS/DFS objects and disks.
	On 27th February Gary Gooding and myself will attempt the impossible
and migrate the existing namespace from the Functional to the Geographic
branch of the Namespace will little or no disruption to the service. (I told
you it was impossible) And, at the same time we will attempt to move the
clearinghouses from NECK/ELBOW to the new UCG Namespace server which is being
installed as I write.

	More details should become available later this week.

	To be continued.

318.1Do the CD shuffle!!HEWIE::RUSSELLI should have got a Duracell!!Tue Feb 13 1990 09:467
and to (only slightly) complicate matters, we'll be doing that well known
dance, "The CD Shuffle" at the same time, to put the on-line
documentation back onto CUCKOO, and using HEWIE's CD for the ConDist.

So, altogether, a-one, a-two, a-one, two, three, four,

Peter.
318.2New home for books and software kits NECK::THOMPSONJerry Thompson (7)781-4421Wed Feb 14 1990 13:5120
	The DFS access points for the CD's containing VMS documentation and
VMS software kits now point to the new locations on HEWIE and CUCKOO.

They are

	CUCKOO$dub0 contains VMS documentation.
	HEWIE$dub1 contains VMS kits (NB kits come on 2 CD's, contact Peter
				Russell if the kit you want is on the other
				disk)

Access points are
	SALE_SERV.EUR.UK.ADG.LOCAL.EAR_BOOKS	(i.e. no change)
	SALE_SERV.EUR.UK.ADG.LOCAL.CONDIST	(New access point)

Add the following lines to SYS$STARTUP:DFS$SYSTARTUP.COM to access the kit disk.

$DFSCP == "$DFS$CONTROL"
$DFSCP Mount/system sale_serv.eur.uk.adg.local.condist condist /vol=condist -

318.3New moan for software kitsLEG::GURRANYour reality or mine...Thu Feb 15 1990 09:0710
>...contact Peter Russell if the kit you want is on the other disk)

Would it not be better to assign each disk a day or day so that you
didn't lose an installation or a copy half way through?

Just a thought,

Procedurally yours,
		Martin.
318.4CONDIST Comments Vol 2LEG::GURRANYour reality or mine...Thu Feb 15 1990 10:378
Further to my last remarks on the CONDIST disk, as switching the disk
involves more than just swapping the CD ,as I have just discovered ( I
apologise for any loss of access about 10-10:30am 15-FEB-1990), I
believe even more strongly that the switch should be timed in order to
avoid any possible disruption.

Martin.
318.5S'not a problem,...HEWIE::RUSSELLI should have got a Duracell!!Mon Feb 19 1990 08:5113
if you follow the instructions, and contact me (or one of the other
consultants) first.

You can't dismount a CD if someone has any files open on it.

If you are installing something big over the network, it may be worth
a call to me to let me know, and I won't switch the disk until
you're finished.

At this stage, I don't think there will be a major conflict. If there is,
we'll review it.

Peter.
318.6Involvement vs. committmentNECK::THOMPSONJerry Thompson (7)781-4421Mon Feb 19 1990 16:3912
Er, does that mean you're volunteering to switch the CD's every day at set times
without fail, arrange a stand-in if you're ill, cover weekends for the
workaholics and so on Martin?

What's the betting you'll upset people whose copy was about to finish
*just* when you swapped disks?

The solution we've got is not ideal but was thought to be the one offering
most benefit for least hassle until we can get more CD drives installed.

However, if you're happy to be IT for the next 3 months or so...
