303.0. "Library for DECwindows bookreader files " by NECK::THOMPSON (Jerry Thompson (7)781-4421) Mon Dec 11 1989 16:25

	As an experiment I've created a common directory for bookreader files
on the PASTIT cluster in DISK$DATA1:[SITE.BOOKREADER].

The good news is that this will save disk space on satellite boot nodes and
guarantee that files are backed up. The bad news is that bookreader startup
takes longer - even though response seems just as good once the window has
started.

	The files are world readable so anyone with a workstation can access
books placed there. I suggest DFS is the most suitable means of accessing the
books unless your workstation is booted from PASTIT.

	Here's how to get at the new directory and the books on CD that
	runs on CUCKOO:

Add the following to SYS$STARTUP:DFS$SYSTARTUP.COM

$ DFSCP mount/SYSTEM sale_serv.eur.uk.adg.local.booklib    booklib -
	/volume=booklib /devi=dfsc3001:
$ DFSCP mount/system SALE_SERV.EUR.UK.ADG.LOCAL.EAR_BOOKS  bwks -
	/volume=bwks    /devi=dfsc3002:

	and edit SYS$STARTUP:DECW$STARTAPPS.COM to modify the DECW$BOOK logical name
definition to include a search for DISK$BOOKLIB:[000000]

$DECW$DEFINE	DECW$BOOK	sys$common:[decw$book],DISK$BOOKLIB:[000000],-
					disk$bwks:[decw$book]

	When these 2 commands are executed from the system account on your
node you'll see all the literature on PASTIT and CUCKOO.

	If you want to include/move your copies of *.decw$book to this library
area contact either Keith Davies or one of the Consultants Group.

I would not edit decw$startapps.com cos it will most probably be superceded
when you upgrade. define the decw$book logical somewhere else.

Any chance of making them world readable?

    Would it be possible to have a list of all the directories, DFS'ed or
    otherwise, CD or alternative etc. where world-readable on-line
    documentation can be found ?
303.3More?NECK::THOMPSONJerry Thompson (7)781-4421Fri Dec 22 1989 09:396
	I know of no other public directories available to us, but there are
plans to get another CD reader installed on one of our MVAXes so that we can
all play 2 tunes at once!

	The idea is that we'll get updated VMS documentation and VMS Layered
product CD's every 3-6 months and keep the copy of each type on line.
303.4A libray full of books : - where,how,when,what ?? SOOTY::CLIFFEHowl at the MoonWed Feb 28 1990 09:3423
	My default(?) DECW$BOOK log looks like this -

Tue CATPAW -> sh log decw$book
   "DECW$BOOK" = "SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]" (DECW$LOGICAL_NAMES)
        = "DISK$BWKS:[DECW$BOOK]"
        = "DISK$BOOKLIB:[000000]"

	I get this :-

Error opening disk$booklib:[000000]library.decw$bookshelf

no such device available.

	Can someone supply me with the setup to be able to read them ?

	(I humbley have to say I deleted the command file somewhere along
	  the line that set the logicals up !!)

	Thanks in advance.

303.5There's no problem on your VS..CURRNT::RUSSELLI should have got a Duracell!!Wed Feb 28 1990 13:0117
    Tom, there's nothing wrong with the logical.

    The problem is with DFS or DNS on one of the clusters. The reboot
    the other night should have fixed it; but obviously not...

    There was a DNS re-shuffle due about now, but Jerry has come down
    with flu, and I dunno the current status.

    In the meantime, remove the DISK$BOOKLIB from the logical by
    doing something similar to
    $ define/sys decw$book sys$common:[decw$book], disk$bwks:[decw$book]

    This will give you the local SWEEP books, and the on-line CD.

    call me on x 4417 if this doesn't work, or you haven't got the privs.

    Peter.
303.6Temp fix applied. but DNS still flaky.HEWIE::RUSSELLI should have got a Duracell!!Thu Mar 01 1990 12:3018
I've reassigned the DECW$BOOK logical for all members of the SOOTY and
SWEEP clusters, but we still have a DNS problem in the building.

If you do a SHOW DEV D, you will be able to see which devices are being
served on your system via DFS. If BWKS is shown, you'll be able to
read the on-line CD.

If it isn't shown, then you're stuck.

If you re-boot ypur VS, it's possible you'll get a different DNS server,
and so be able to see it. It's also possible that you wont.

If you need to read the CD, ask someone else near you if you can do it
on there in the meantime.

The DNS problem is being escalated.

    does this apply to STANDARDS as well ?
303.8Flaky :== not constant!CURRNT::RUSSELLI should have got a Duracell!!Thu Mar 01 1990 18:099
    It applies to all the DNS services..

    if you're lucky, you'll get access to it, otherwise you won't...

    There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it; if there was, it would
    help in fixing it!!

    Oh, and don't worry about the DNS problem any more,

    we found an easier solution...
