> In line with the EASE migration plan, CURRNT will be upgraded to EASE V5.1-1
> sometime around October 2nd.
Peter,
Is there any chance of Document being upgraded to version 1.2 at the same time
please. This is one of the products that is specifically excluded from the Ease
Kit. I've encountered problems with version 1.1 that appear to have been
solved in 1.2.
Thanks in anticipation

277.2 | Is it available yet? | HEWIE::RUSSELL | One man's floor-another's ceiling. | Wed Sep 13 1989 18:20 | 14 |
| As far as I can tell (from the VMS V5.2 release notes), the current
vesion of Document is V1.1.
If you know when V1.2 has been released/is due to be released, please
let me know.
We will install it on one of the clusters while we check it out, and depending
on the results, roll it up to the rest of the clusters.
Gail, it's possible your problem is a "feature" introduced in V1.1,
we still have V1.0 installed on one of the clusters, I think. Have you
tried it there?
Peter.

277.3 | Ease covers some of the upgrade - rest is manual | BIGHUN::HARVEY | The Devon Dumpling | Thu Sep 14 1989 15:25 | 27 |

Gial, at the risk of a rathole (what me?) as I have been repeatedly told that
the versions/products on Futurs/Currnt and pastit have nothing to do with EASE
.........
EASE is part of the process to make the upgrade to new versions of layered
products easier for operations.
There is a list of all products that we - in the field - should be running.
The Ease kit covers some of these, the others still have to be done manually.
The version of DOCUMENT which release management says alligns with the Ease kit
just released is 1.1 (We upgraded from 1.0 in April/May).
We could not upgrade to anything except VMS 5.1-1 and ALL-IN-1 2.3 this time
around, as Euro ADG said they could not cater for anything else.
Anyway a tickler for DOCUMENT 1.2 - if you plan to use any FONTS for the LN03,
I've heard rumours, I'd check the situation out first if anyone plans to use
them.
I have asked for Document 1.2 to be the version included for the next migration
in March/April.

I'm sorry; this statement is incorrect. EASE does play the major part in
deciding which versions of which products are installed on the
ADG clusters. We actually run EASE on CURRNT and PASTIT. We may well run
EASE on FUTURS soon. At the moment, FUTURS is "very close" to being EASE.
>We could not upgrade to anything except VMS 5.1-1 and ALL-IN-1 2.3 this time

The decision is not Euro ADG's. The Area I.S. Group make the decisions
in Ferney, based on input from several groups, of which Euro ADG is just
one. The main guide to the decision is "what is currently shipping from
ESSB at the cut-off time".

Please, don't spread rumours or ticklers - they only tend to confuse
an already confused issue.
In my opinion, if you *know* something, than say it. If you prefer, leave
a pointer to where the item is discussed (for example, see xxxx::document
note xyz for some details).

Thanks for your input Peter and Heather!
V1.2 of Document is alive and well and running on some of the machines in
Reading - RDGOAR for one but I don't know whether this counts as 'released'.
My problem is certainly only with V1.1 and as a temporary (I hope) measure I am
using V1.0 on Futurs. The document is part of a new application under
development so I'm a little unhappy about swaping to Futurs in order to
change/reformat the documentation. The document is fine under V1.2 but the
response is so ssllloooowwwww to Reading - hence my request for the upgrade on
Currnt.
The document is in Postscript format but thanks for your warning re: LN03 fonts
Heather.

A scenario for you:
The decision is made to upgrade to anything out of SDC (Now SSB) 5 months
before the upgrade. This has been in place for a couple of years.
Euro ADG say they can't upgrade to ANYTHING this time around(but only let
people know in JULY). Pressure from the field compromises on 5.1-1 and ALL-IN-1
only (although much more is needed).
If ADG hadn't blackballed the upgrade, we would be upgrading to V2 of Notes,
V1.2 of DOCUMENT, V4 VTX, V3.1b CDD+, LPS20 printserver,WPS-plus V3.1,
DECwindows...........

I have a mail which says there is a problem. I have asked for more info
regarding the problem, and if there is a patch.
When I get more info. I'll post it. I thought you may be interested if you were
seriously looking at upgrading - you may have the contacts to find this out
before I get a reply.

277.7 | CURRNT upgrade to EASE V5.1-1 on Wed 4th Oct,. | HEWIE::RUSSELL | One man's floor-another's ceiling. | Wed Sep 20 1989 18:45 | 11 |
| CURRNT will stay down after it's full backups on Tuesday evening, 3rd
October, and wil be upgraded to EASE V5.1-1 on Wednesday 4th October.
If all goes well, the system may be up sometime during the afternoon.
However, bear in mind Murphy's Law, and if you plan for CURRNT to be
down all day Wednesday then you won't be disapointed.
Please contact me if this schedule causes you a major problem.

As CURRNT is the the development machine, this means a complete
day lost for all personel in our section.
Can I ask ask why it was not scheduled for a weekend job?

>Can I ask ask why it was not scheduled for a weekend job?
Valid question; but look at it from I.S.'s point of view. They have
*a lot* of systems to upgrade during the migration window, and this is the
first upgrade to be scheduled.
It's better done during normal working hours so that we can get support
from Ferney in the event of EASE problems, or licensing problems, or .....
We do have options for those projects that find this potentially
impacts their schedules; please come and see me.
Peter.
