270.0. "Disk usage on CURRNT/FUTURS" by CURRNT::DAVIES (Let's all get BLASTED!) Mon Aug 14 1989 17:49

This message is being distributed via MAIL to all FUTURS and CURRNT
users and also placed in the System Management Notes Conference.

As most of you are probably already aware ADG recently upgraded the
disks on most systems from RA80/81/82's to the BIGGER RA90 series
devices. These new devices have some 2,376,153 blocks available on
each of them.

On Friday 11-08-89 we ran out of space on at least two disks on
CURRNT and we remain dangerously close to having the same problem
on several other disks on both the CURRNT and FUTURS clusters.

It is imperative that everyone PURGEs unwanted files on a regular
basis from their own accounts AND ALSO their application accounts
and directories.

Can you also check the various accounts for which you are
responsible and DELETE any Royal and Ancienct dross which is no
longer required. (If you dont need the information but would like
it for possible future reference ask IS to archive it off onto
tape for you)

A quick look through the directories shows a lot of *.BCK files
which can probably be cleaned up - judging by creation/last_access
dates. Can yo also double check any *.LN03 documents you have -
do you still need them?. Generally check your accounts/applications
for large unnecessary files and get rid of them.

If everyone doesn't heed this warning then DISK QUOTAs will be
reintroduced. This means more aggravation all round.

Please, lets see some more disk space available, get rid of that
rubbish, tidy that account, archive unwanted history, get busy
- NOW!!!

Keith.

270.1Disk Space, good but could be better.CURRNT::DAVIESClose, but no banana.Fri Aug 18 1989 10:0726
This message is being distributed via MAIL to all FUTURS and CURRNT
users and also placed in the System Management Notes Conference.

Following on from the earlier reminder about lack of disk space I would
like to say thanks to everyone who responded. Both systems are beginning
to look a lot healthier.

Can you all continue to monitor your accounts regularly and keep them
tidy.

Unfortunately there is a lot of space still being taken up by files which
may well be redundant. I would ask you all once again to double check any
large files in any accounts for which you are responsible and if possible
get rid of them.

If by the end of next week there are still disks which are low on space
then QUOTAS will be re-enabled, starting on those disks which are low on
space and gradually spreading onto all disks.

It should only take a few minutes to quickly check for unwanted large(ish)
files in accounts - don't delay - check NOW!

Keith.
