254.7 | EASE and DECwindows not compatible | NECK::THOMPSON | | Wed Jul 12 1989 14:40 | 14 |
| There are no plans for installing DECwindows tools on any ADG main clusters
(yet) because they are reported to replace/patch software common to many other
applications. The advice coming from the people building the next EASE kit
therefore is that we should not mix workstations with EASE systems for the time
being.
This is why all the VS2000's were built into the CUCKOO LAVC instead of the
FUTURS/CURRNT/PASTIT clusters as was originally planned.
Once MIGS and the LAVC can be separated then I expect we'll be able to install
all kinds of wierd and wonderful DECwindowy kits for you Dave, but until then
your requests will have to wait. Please be patient, it takes a long time to grow
a new boot-server.

| Sorry, Jane, I should have posted thios earlier, but I've been a bit busy
sorting out VMS V5.1-1 upgrades...
ADGDOC V2.0 has been installed on PASTIT; we'll let you play with it for
a few days to make sure none of the existing stuff is "broken", then we'll
put it onto CURRNT and FUTURS.
Peter.

Could you tell me what is changed in VMS with DECwindows that will effect so
much software that applications use?
What will be done between December and April to the applications that can't be
done between now and October?
I have spoken to engineering, and they have no idea how the changes could affect
applications.
I was under the impression that the changes were to DDIF, and CDA.
We have more and more workstations, especially for things such as DECwrite,
TIMA, and executive interfaces.
We need DECwindows on the machines so we can run the users' workstations in a
secure manner, in line with the European workstation strategy, and also so we
can show our customers how we use our own technology - Digital should be the
numer one exemplar account - EIS mission.

254.15 | Some answers.. | HEWIE::RUSSELL | BX Turbo drivers do it with woooosh! | Thu Jul 20 1989 12:34 | 21 |
| Heather,
VMS V5.1 does not have DECwindows "seamlessly" integrated with VMS, where
VMS V5.2 does.
AREA IS were concerned that the *many* modules replaced by DECwindows
may have an impact on our applications.
Further testing has been done, and this concern has been removed.
However, EASE **at this time** is not addressing itself to DECwindows.
It will on "a future release" (almost certainly the next one, as DECwindows is
fully part of VMS then.)
We can, and do, run workstations with DECwindows on our systems. It is
installed on our FUTURS cluster, but at this time we are not
using it there, as we are switching most of them to DECwindows V2 FT
(which is still an un-announced product, so don't tell anyone external
anything about it!)
Peter.

SHAPES?
Our users have their accounts on CHEFS and SUBURB, in addition to this being
their office environment, they also run European systems such as ASSIST, AMIS
and local ones such as ACUMEN.
In the North region they also run such applications as CHAMP, AQS, LARS, and
a host of other European applications.
We need to boot them off these clusters, and be able to have the DDIF
interface that comes with DECwindows, so they can all communicate.
These are NOT technical users.
We have to install DECwindows.
On our own again?
Heather

254.17 | SHAPES is not an ADG system... | ELBOW::DRAPER | Steve Draper | Thu Jul 20 1989 15:14 | 20 |
| As you may remember from your days in ADG, Heather, this notes conference is
concerned with the system management of ADG systems only.
SHAPES is not an ADG system and controlling it's software configuration does
not fall within the province of ADG. The earlier references to the installation
of DECwindows were in respect of ADG systems only.
I suggest that you get in touch with either
MURRAY SMITH @UCG
or
DENNIS SHILL @UCG
if you are anxious to see DECwindows installed on SHAPES. I believe that
Murray is responsible for the day to day management of SHAPES, while Dennis is
more concerned with the planning aspects.
