245.0. "FUTURS - Disk Replacement Programme" by SHAPES::SYSTEM () Tue Jun 06 1989 09:33

Dear All,

Just a reminder that FUTURS will be unavailable from Friday June 9th
at 17:30 until Monday 12th June 1989 for FUTURS's disk replacement
programme (See note 190.14 in SYSTEM_MANAGEMENT notes file). The
original note specified downtime from Saturday 10th but as there is so
much to be done we will need to start on Friday evening.

All RA81 data disks will be replaced by RA90's. You will see an
improvement in disk space.

The table below shows the current physical disks and the disks that
the workload will be backed up to.

There will be a number of things that will have changed after the
workload moves:

1. The physical device names will have changed (See table below).

2. The Disk Label's will have changed (See table below).

3. Logicals names for the disks have changed (See table below).

$98$DUA13:

$98$DUA16: $98$DUA46: DATA6 DISK$DATA6: RA90
$98$DUA21:

There are a number of changes to be made after the move some of which
you will have to carry out:

1. Please ensure that you have not hard-coded physical device names
in your command procedures or programs.

2. Re-submitt personal batch jobs.

3. We will leave current logicals pointing to the relevant disks
until Friday 16th June. Please ensure that you have modified
your procedures or programs to reflect the new logicals eg:
DISK$DATA1:, DISK$DATA2: etc. by that date.

Below is a table showing the current logicals and their future
equivalents. All logicals in the first column will be removed on
Friday 16th June.

245.1Don't be a disk-space glutton !CURRNT::DAWVTX does it with pages !!Mon Jul 24 1989 17:3019
Brilliant, we have new disks with tons of space !!

Well we would, except that this morning disk$data1 on FUTURS was
down to 300 blocks. These disks are more than twice the capacity
of the old ones (or so I believed).

It looks like people are being excessively greedy with disk space,
and we're back to the old phoning IS/ops to send the

"please purge files on this disk as we are low on space"

messages, and IS/ops having to purge the disk themselves.

This was almost intollerable before, and if the situation is happening
again, perhaps disk quotas or other such methods ought to be considered.

THINK - before you gobble up disk space, PLEASE!!!
