234.0. "Printer Superusers." by SHAPES::MULLENG (Dreams of a paperless office.. . . .) Thu May 11 1989 17:26

Isn't it about time we thought again about the printer
	'Superuser/Key Operator' system?

I was interested to read the resent mail from Sarah
Wilson regarding the call for users to 'volunteer themselves' to
become LN03 Superusers. What was not mentioned was the time
required to perform the following tasks:

		- fixing paper jams after paper has been incorrectly
	loaded.

		- performing routine maintenances (not so routine when
	performed incorrectly.)

		- an increasing amount of time spent calling out field
service for the rapidly ageing printers.

		- adding toner.

		- ordering consumables.

Is it reasonable to ask developers and supporters etc. to
	become part time operators?

Now that there are a considerable amount of printers in the
group and an increasing amount of paper traffic perhaps an operator
could be employed full time, to look after all the printers used by
ADG. The job could also include looking after the LPS40's and
Line Printers overcoming the Key Operator problem there.

The system could certainly be justified financially. I know of
one discontented LN03 Key Operator who is at SDS level and I'm sure
his time could be better spent on activities where his skills are
	much more valuable.

		Ged.

234.1Laser Printers....INCH::SIMPSONIt's all happening.....Thu May 11 1989 18:1719

Ged as a fellow lps40 superuser I would also like to point out
that most of my time that is spent on printer maintenance is
because of paper jams! The jams are usually caused by the paper
being added wrongly even lengthways instead of sideways. I appreciate
there are notices on how to load a lps40 round the printer but everyday
users seam to still have problems!!!!! Any suggestions????

The idea of having one person responsible for all laser printers
sounds a good one but in the case of illness/holidays there would have
to be someone as a backup. This of course might mean dropping
all their present workload for 1 or 2 weeks!

One question is lps40$gable ADG responsability because it is situated
next to non-ADG groups but has currently 3 ADG superusers!!!

234.2Another paper jam !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YARD::DAWoa in a manger ...Thu May 11 1989 18:2060
For Gable (block B first floor) and Eye (block A first floor) I'm
getting a large amount of calls for maintenance , even after Ged, and
the rest have had their fair share, and it's starting to take
up too much of my time.

As far as I know, there are four key operators for the two printers,
    EYE and GABLE -

Myself, Ged Mullen, Richard Simpson and Jane Alford.

which was fine when only block A was occupied, but obviously the 'paper
traffic' is becoming excessive now, since the building has filled up.

The suggestion I have is that there is one person from each unit in the
block where the printer lives, trained as a key operator (perhaps the
same ones that are the ln03 key operators), then if someone notices an
error with the printer, they can approach the person in their unit
first of all, then if they're not around they can try another on the
list. This would in fact mean that there would be 7 key operators
available, i.e. one at hand all the time.

This also makes sense after Sarah Wilson's mail this morning where
IS/ops are requesting two key operators for each ln03 i.e. 18 key
operators. This would make training very easy as they would already
have an understanding of ln03's i.e. what toner is, paper is etc...

Here's a list of the units in block A with the respective unit managers
    and the known key operators.

    Marketing and Education Paul Temple
Site Service Unit Janet Taylor Rob Daw

Both Ged and Richard reside in block B at the moment.

    Hope something's done soon

    Regards,

    Rob
