186.0. "PDP software/hardware changes." by STOPIT::RUSSELL (I'm sorry, I haven't a clue.) Mon Oct 17 1988 09:23

Here is the "plan" for a software upgrade to RSTS/E V9.6 of one of
our PDP-11's, and some network routing changes for them.

Please feel free to call me on x 4417 if you have any questions
    or concerns with it.

The end result should be a much improved Decnet service for all
    the PDP-11's.

Subject	PDP migration plans.

Further to the suggestions issued by Jerry in June, here is a
detailed migration plan for the PDP's at UCG.

Please note that some of the dates depend on Field Service arriving
on time!

Now that the BOPS/PDP development and OAS-Migration are complete,
we should re-assess the use made of the PDP's.

SEPTIC (11/44) is becoming "surplus to requirements", and will
be scrapped in the near future, after this plan is implemented.

This leaves us with three "large" PDP's; at the moment 2 x 11/84, and
1 x 11/70. The 11/70 is scheduled to be upgraded to an 11/84; delivery
is now due in late November/early December.

The following workload still exists for these PDP's

Sales/Finance support.
BOPS Support.
OAS development and support.
Possible COMAND/Migration workload.

As AOG have now cancelled the requirement for the remaining RSTS
applications to be migrated to RSTS/E V9.x (as the Decnet Phase V
implementation has now gone back to FY91), there is no need to
upgrade the "production" systems.

The systems are still suffering from a very poor network service
via the VAXen, so we should address this as a priority. The VAXen
currently used as routers will become a LAVC boot node (ADGV01), or
will become unavailable for PDP links due to hardware upgrade (YARD).

Therefore, please find attached the migration plan.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please
call me on ext. 4417.

Last Revision : 14-Oct-88, 15:30.

1) The BOPS support and OAS development and support workload will be
merged onto a single PDP (SEPTIC - but may be MAIDEN for a
short time, depending on some required FS work on MAIDEN.)
This is dependent on the SUPPORT cluster releasing 1 x RA60 disk)
								18-Oct-88

2) RSTS/V9.6 will be installed on MAIDEN 18-Oct-88.

3) FS will install DELUA on MAIDEN ASAP

4) MAIDEN will then be available on a "direct" LAT service.
The Reverse LAT connections to MAIDEN will then be switched onto
SEPTIC. ASAP after (2) and (3)

5) SEPTICS's DMR link will be disconnected from ADGV01, and linked
to MAIDEN. 2 days after (2) and (3)
							are complete.

After this is complete, there will be no PDP links via
ADGV01, which is then available for LAVC work.

A DMR will be de-installed from ADGV01, and installed in
	MAIDEN, during this interval.

6) After a "test" period, to ensure stability and performance is
acceptable, the DMR for RDGE39 will disconnected from YARD, and
linked to MAIDEN. One week after (5).

7) RDGE03 and RDGE39 applications will be "merged" into a single system,
and the SEPTIC system will move over to one of these systems,
allowing SEPTIC to be scrapped. by mid-November.

The DMR link for RDGE03 will be "swapped" for the SEPTIC link
on MAIDEN at this time, thereby removing the last PDP link from the
   VAXen.

Note 1 : RDGE03 will remain linked via YARD until this exercise
         is complete.

Note 2 : if a dedicated OAS system is required for COMAND/Migration
testing, then a review of the above plan will be needed.
The required OAS environment will have to be built onto
RDGE39, or SEPTIC will need to be maintained.

Note 3 : since RSTS/E does not allow "Poor Man's Routing", a captive
"copy" account must be made available on MAIDEN to allow
data files to be copied to/from Europe to the support PDP's.

If required, SEPTIC could be maintained as a RSTS/E V9.6 system, with
minimal disk storage, to act as an alternate router if MAIDEN is
unavailable.

186.1Phase One completed.STOPIT::RUSSELLI'm sorry, I haven't a clue.Tue Oct 18 1988 18:2518
As of 16:00 today, the first couple of steps have been completed.

The "production" MAIDEN and SEPTIC systems have been "merged"
onto the MAIDEN disks, providing BOPS support and OAS development
    and support.

SEPTIC is now running RSTS/E V9.6, on a single RA60.

Field Service are expected "in the next day or so", to ECO the
Floating Point Accelerator on MAIDEN and RDGE39, and install the
    DELUA ethernet interface on MAIDEN.

When this is done, the disks now on MAIDEN will switch to SEPTIC,
and MAIDEN wil become the RSTS/E V9.6 system, acting as a decnet
    router for SEPTIC.

    Peter.

186.2CASOAS now on the LAT.FOOT::RUSSELLI'm sorry, I haven't a clue.Wed Oct 19 1988 12:409
RSTS/E V9.6 has now made it's way onto CASOAS (the micro PDP-11),
which is now available on a "direct" LAT connection via the
    ethernet interface.

If anyone wants to "look" at it, please call me on x 4417 and
I'll be happy to give you an account.

    Peter.

186.3FOOT::RUSSELLI'm sorry, I haven't a clue.Thu Oct 20 1988 19:1535
    Latest update :

Steps 1 to 5 are now complete. This means that MAIDEN is running
RSTS/E V9.6, with a DELUA, and is available on a direct LAT
service called VIRGIN, until the "reverse LAT" lines have been
    unplugged, and connected onto SEPTIC.

SEPTIC is now connected via a DMR in MAIDEN. (A minor problem
preventing RSTS/E V9.6 "talking" to SEPTIC has been corrected via
a patch on SEPTIC, which will take effect on a re-boot. In the
meantime, you can SET HOST or COPY via YARD, INCH, etc.)
[Thanks to the guys in I.S. for sussing this one out for me!]

Providing the DMR link to SEPTIC is reliable, we will progress
with linking RDGE39 via MAIDEN about 31-Oct or so, when I'm back
    from a short holiday.

If you have any problems in this area, pleas contact Jerry Thompson
    in the first instance.

    Peter.

    hardware config follows.

    MAIDEN - PDP 11/84, 1 x RA60, 1 TU80, 1 x DELUA, 1 x DMR-11,
2 x DZ11 (but the DZ's will probably be removed, soon.)

The status of RDGE03 and RDGE30 will be examined early in November,
prior to the 11/84 upgrade arriving.

The "old" MAIDEN reverse-LAT service has been removed, so the
VIRGIN LAT service will be renamed to MAIDEN tomorrow morning.

The additional 8 lines for SEPTIC will hopefully be available towards
the end of this week; we need FS to move the DZ from MAIDEN to
    SEPTIC.

Two DMR interfaces will be de-installed from ADGV01, and installed
in MAIDEN on Thursday this week, ready for moving their routing
    off YARD.

The DZ11 has ben removed from MAIDEN, and installed in
SEPTIC - the LAT service needs to be enabled, and we will have 16
    lines into SEPTIC available.

RDGE03 and RDGE39 are now routed via MAIDEN. RDGE03 is working
well, but RDGE39 is still as bad as ever. The problem is caused
by time-outs on the DMC link - I am progressing this one to try
to sort out if it is hardware or software or whatever.

    Peter.

SEPTIC now has 16 reverse LAT line available.

RDGE39 is now working fine on the network. The problem was traced
to an incorrectly set-up DMR module, which worked fine under all
diagnostics, and fine at low levels of network access.

Here is the final(!) plan for the PDP's...

At the beginning of December, SEPTIC will be re-built on a Saturday
by our friendly F.S. as the new 11/84, which is due in in the next couple
of weeks.

RDGE03 will be scrapped at this time, and the disks "shuffled"
to make life easier in the machine room.

This is how the PDP "cluster" will look after that...

This set up will allow flexibility in connecting drives to systems
as necessary in the event of system problems, etc.
None of the drives will be dual ported; re-cabling will be
necessary in this event.

The backup regime will be;
SEPTIC and RDGE39 - Full backups of DU0 and DU1 onto RA60 packs on
a weekly basis, with daily incrementals to tape. DU2 (the RA60) will
be used solely for backup and data transfer purposes. DU3 (RA81) will
be an on-line "scratch" pack, that will not normally be backed up
at all.

MAIDEN - the RA60 will be the only disk drive on this system. A full
backup to tape will be taken from time to time, at specific request.

In late December or early January, the node name RDGE39 will be
"retired", and either will be renamed MAIDEN, and the PDP router named
as UCGPDP, or another name selected for RDGE39.

Peter.

RDGE03 is "dying" at the end of today.

But it isn't being scrapped yet; it will rise, Pheonix-like,
and become a (temporary) BETA test PDP, to assist in the user
testing taking place in Project Room 5 at the moment.

Theplan (subject to change..) is that the systems currently being
used for this user test (GOOGLY and RDGFSC), will have their
data transferred down here at the weekend, and the users will use
hardware here for there testing for the next three weeks.

This will ease the congestion on the READING service from here,
and hopefully make the users' who are doing the tests life a little
    easier and quicker.

When U3 is finally scrapped, an appropriate celebration will be
    held.

And the 11/84 updgrade for SEPTIC still hasn't arrived.....

I am afraid I am the bearer of sad tidings.

Our much beloved 11/70 system (formerly known and loved as RDGE03) is now
no more.

It has been finally unplugged, and is now sitting in the corner of the machine
room looking very sad.

The disks that were on the 11/70 have now been reconfigured onto the old
"SEPTIC" 11/44, which is now up and running as RDGE03.

I understand this system will be primarily used by EALUS as a training
and test system; ADG will not be the "owner" of it.

If you wish to use it for anything, I guess a call to x4040 to book it is
in order.

A wake will be arranged in the near future to mourn the passing of our
long term friend.

RDGE03 is now configured as an 11/44, 2MB, 1 x UDA50, 3 x RA60, 2 x DZ11,
1 x DMC11. (note:no tapes now)

Peter.
