In a recent note (174.4 written 13-Sep-88), I said that I would soon be
giving details of forthcoming hardware (and software) moves - so here
they are.
The changes will occur in several stages in order to minimise the
impact on ADG, and are designed to try and meet the following
objectives:
1. To increase the power in the Order Fulfilment Integration Cluster.
This currently consists of 2 x 11/785 for which 2 x 8700
replacements had been ordered. These 8700s have now been cancelled
and we must do what we can with the equipment we currently have.
2. To make more efficient use of our processors.
3. To eliminate the use of the RDGEnn series node names. The intention
to do this was announced back in May, prior to our move to The
Crescent - at last its now going to happen!
4. To make more efficient use of our disk space.
First, for the benefit of those who have recently joined us and
are not sure of the configurations that we currently operate, I
will describe them briefly:

In addition to the above, there is an Order Fulfilment Integration
cluster which currently consists of 2 x 11/785s. The purpose of
this cluster is for integration testing of the component products
of Order Fulfilment. No development or support work is done on this
cluster.
None of the HARDWARE moves described in this note will affect the
SUPPRT cluster.
The table below shows the machine moves that will take place,
using the existing node names as an aid to clarity:

The schedule for these changes is currently as follows:
i) New 8700 installation (ex FLAT) starts Mon 19th Sept.
ii) New 8700 replaces 8530 (FOOT) in ADG cluster Sat 24th Sept.
iii) 8530 (FOOT) replaces 11/785 (URIAH) in O.F. cluster
Sat 24th Sept.
iv) 11/785 (URIAH) boots into ADG cluster on new root
Sat 24th Sept.
v) 8700 (STOPIT) workload moves to ADG cluster on or by
Sat 1st Oct.
vi) 8700 (STOPIT) replaces 11/785 (HEEP) in O.F. cluster
Sat 1st Oct.
vii) 11/785 (HEEP) boots in FUTURS cluster on new root
Sat 1st Oct.
As each new or moved processor joins a cluster its node name will
be changed to remove the Reading node names (RDGEnn). The Reading
node names associated with PDP systems (RDGE03, RDGE39) will be
dealt with separately.
Objective 4 (to make more efficient use of our disk space) is being
dealt with by a separate, but parallel exercise to ensure that all
projects are on the correct cluster (SUPPRT/ADG/FUTURS) or
alternatively either archived or deleted. This project is being
run by our Sandwich Student (Steve Green) under the direction of
Jerry Thompson. Steve G. is currently compiling a list of all projects
and the people responsible for them, and will be in touch with those
people in the near future. A possible spin-off from this exercise
that is currently under consideration is the creation of a project
database and associated software/proceedures to try to ensure that
we keep on top of this situation in the future.

Two things, chaps and chapesses...
a) wot abaht V5, then, eh? Where's the update promised in .2??
b) when will the network node changes be made for the clusters'
new names, and will it be a *full* network update - there seem's
to be quite a lot of systems moving over the pond this weekend...

Okay, here's a minor update... FUTURS will be the VMS V5.0 machine (no surprises there!). The plan is to upgrade FUTURS to V5 and EASE at the same time, as EASE comes pre-built within the V5 environment. There is no fixed date as yet, except that it will be within the October/November timeframe. There is a UK IS technical forum next week to determine the actual dates, so we should know by the following week. The VMS V4.7 layered product upgrade will also be going ahead, again in the October/November timeframe. And once again, firm dates for the upgrades will be determined at next weeks forum. These layered product upgrades will not effect any applications based at The Crescent, as the recent questionnaire showed. That's all for now, more information soon (around 10th-12th October). month-ish) be getting its NEW disc drives installed.

BACKUPS.
