Following the announcement of the installation of ALL-IN-1 on the FUTURS cluster, I wonder how many All-IN-1 users System Management anticipate using this resource ? Many FUTURS users have experienced performance problems... even not being able to access the system due to the maximum number of users on the nodes being exceeded. And now this "CPU killer" is being let loose on FUTURS ?!?!?!? Is there a case for System Management checking the number of active user accounts v performance on our hardware, before allowing certain software products to be installed ? Chris.

I have been informed by IS that this product is only being installed for development purposes, not as I feared for general usage.

However... my comments on system performance still stand. This is not criticism of I.S.,(who unfortunately are working under extreme conditions to maintain a service to the whole of Basingstoke - not just the Crescent) but more a thought provoker. As Geoff Shingles commented ... we are all working hard, we should be working better. Again, I am not implying that I.S. are not working hard enough, but shouldn't there be somebody who is looking at the Big Picture to check that computer resources are being used effectively. Could this be a self-policing operation by a consensus of ADG personnel, who could look at the impact/growth of projects on specific nodes, where moving the project or rather allocating new projects to different nodes, could reduce potiential problems ? Are there are steps (not requiring IS intervention) that we can do to assist ourselves as system users ? Again, this is not "I.S. knocking", but suggestions for discussion and comment.
174.3 | but STOPIT already has it | RDGE43::JANJUA | Lets go for it. | Tue Sep 13 1988 11:20 | 7 |
Why do we need to have ALL-IN-1 on futurs for Development when this product is already installed on STOPIT (EUE) for this very reason ? May be someone could explain why ? Danish.
174.4 | So does FUTURS!!! | ELBOW::DRAPER | Steve Draper | Tue Sep 13 1988 12:20 | 10 |
For those people who haven't realised (and I now know of at least two!), ALL-IN-1 has been present on FUTURS for a long time. This is really a re-installation. As to the overall problem of performance: there is a good deal of work going on to try to help alleviate this, and I will post more information about it in a separate note in the near future (no pun intended!!).
