149.0. "Phantom Printers." by STOPIT::BADMAN (Laugh ? I almost did.) Thu Jun 30 1988 12:37

Call me impatient if you will, but weren't there going to be
printers at the end of each set of desks - ie one printer per
    six people ?

When (if) are these printers arriving ?

Are they going to be LN03's ?

Said printers are on order (10 of them - 13 were originally ordered,
but 3 got canned for reasons of cost constraint). As soon as we
have more information, I will pass it on to you.

How are these printers going to set set up?

Will they just have wires hanging out to connect 'em to the back
of the terminal for local printing.

Will they (hopefully) be connected to the LAT/DECservers and queues
set up on all the machines. If so can we sort out a naming conevtion
so if the one in our area busts, unlikely I know, we can sus out
the nearest one and roaming microvaxes can print on the nearest
    printer.

We could start a naming convention competition, hows this,

    LN03_NEAR_GENTS_LHS_BLOCK_A etc..

LN03_A_4_MINS_TO_6 with 12 o'clock pointing to the golden lion

It seems logical for them to have their own queues.

I have in my posession a couple of LN03 printouts that are examples
of the 'blank' sheets of paper that are ejected between jobs on
the printers. These particular examples come from a group in DEC
park and feature 'cute' illustrations on them ...

One has a hedgehog on it and another has a little pig on it with
a message underneath : "Be Kind To Pigs".

Can we have some of these ? A different one for each printer ?
How are they produced ? (I'll do one!!!) We could have a competition
to find the best and use those.

It's little things like this that make life worth living.

You can put those pictures in the reset module

If you have any pictures (machine readable) send them to me and
I will try to incorparate them into my reset module

    Jamie,

Have a look in REGENT::LN03, there is font editor thingy in there
somewhere. You could use that with some sort of scaling maybe.

Borrow a VAXstation and using your favourite graphics editor, RAGS,
SIGHT, GRED, PAINT etc.. create a piccy and maybe, if necessary,
convert the picture to ln03 readable format using SIXTOPS, RETOS,
    RENDER etc etc.

There are other utilities around for this sort of thing, look in
    DOC_GRAPHICS, or METOO::SW_TOOLS_CATALOG.

The tricky part is doing a set conference on this to get three *'s

    Ian.
