141.0. "It's Blinking Awful, Really." by STOPIT::IBL (while you still can!) Fri Jun 17 1988 17:36

Why have the picturesque SYS$ANNOUNCE and SYS$WELCOME
messages on STOPIT (and presumably every other machine
that Jerry & Co. used to manage) been replaced by a
garish piece of uninspired <ESC>apism (excuse the pun
...8^)). It's all very well to pack so much gimmickry
into the initial logins, but the perpetrator might at
least check the results of his/her artistic bent before
inflicting them upon the world at large. As an example,
if the "Ext. 4040" is supposed to be flashed, wouldn't it
look a little more professional if the preceding four or
    	five characters remained constant?

It seems a shame to remove the previous creative exploits of
Jerry & Shaun in this admittedly trivial but *highly* *visible*
area, only to replace them with something of inferior standard,
    	don't you think?

    						Ian!

Absolutely... I didn't want to moan about it, but I think we
might here have the proof that the old adage of " let sleeping dogs
lie" is proving to be true.... ((-:

Come on, stop moaning - its over in a flash!

Surely the best SYS$ANNOUNCE/SYS$WELCOME would be none at all....

Coz the quicker its over, the quicker we can all get on with the
more important things in life, like writing notes about the SYS$ANNOUNCE
and SYS$WELCOME messages.

I agree, its a disgrace to the quality we are trying to uphold!!

As for being over in a flash, well how can it be.. I have to log
on twice in order to catch the rubbish that scrolls of the top of
the screen the first time just in case it was anything important.

If OPs want to play at system management could they practice elsewhere
    first!!!

... on another issue why are the print queues always
    stopping ????????

1. The Notice was created by a System Manager.

2. The System Manager was told by a superior the format required.

3. Believe it or not, we do have slightly more important work to do
than fiddling about with comparatively trivial messages.

4. Practice makes perfect.

5. If anyone would like to send us their own Login Notice efforts please
feel free.

			Jon - I.S. OPERATIONS.

P.S. ... on another issue are the print queues always stopping ????????
........ if you have a problem you can always report it on ext. 4040

			We are there to help

The buck stops....over there somewhere, right? 8^)

     2. The System Manager was told by a superior the format required.

"The four characters preceding the Ext. 4040 must flash also, to
heighten the impression of amateurism" ???

It looks well-fiddled to me. Yes it's trivial, but it's the most
visible part of the system. It's presented to every user (unless
the UAF specifies otherwise?) so why not make it look *good*. The
amount of effort involved is really quite insignificant.

     4. Practice makes perfect.

Absolutely! Practice is better done in private though.....

     5. If anyone would like to send us their own Login Notice efforts please

Can't we just have Jerry & Shaun's originals back, please? It should
be easy to modify the obsolete text?

In that case why did you bother to change the 'trivial' better
    screen that was already there?

    Jon,
you asked for alternative suggestions to the messages currently
implemented, so allow me to present (in the two notes following
    	this one) some possibilities....

Needless to say, although the following examples refer to a
specific system, the pertinent information could easily be
modified to fit any of the ADG machines.

(Many thanks to Shaun Marshall for releasing his original designs)

So he bravely set forth into the Valley of Notes .
Yea, though he feared no evil, the smack in the face with a wet
    fish did surprise him.

Since I've entered into the spirit of these things, albeit half way
through (i.e. I was surprised when they were changed in the
first place) I sought to redress the balance.

The replies have been ... enlightening.

I have endeavoured, nay, laboured, to resolve this simple yet visually
    important dilemma to everyones satisfaction.
Since we are all agreed the original Welcome message (as seen in
a cinema near you soon) was the business and the current one runs
and jumps about like a runny jumpy thing (pause for deep breath)
    let's resurrect the old one.

So why change it in the first place (sleeping canines apart) - shall
we just put that down to experience.

I also agree - more flashy bits.

Perhaps a competition for the most visually effective yet still
readable Welcome message - I'll set aside some time for it myself
perhaps, originality is the Father of Invention.

I look forward to your replies.

My money goes to the logon screen which "throws" the text out of
one corner, to the right place on screen..

for example, do a "SET HOST FNYFS".

    I liked it!!

But, this of course is getting away from the messages you get once
    you have logged in....
