136.0. "Node Numbers must change by 2nd May 1988" by ELBOW::DRAPER (Steve Draper) Wed Apr 27 1988 08:18

	As has been stated previously (in the System Management notes
conference note #135), it will be necessary to change the node numbers
of all our systems when moving to Basingstoke.

	In order to minimise potential problems at the Basingstoke end of
the operation, it has been decided to carry out the necessary changes this
weekend here at Acre Road. HEAD:: (which has already gone to the Crescent)
will be dealt with as an exception.

	The impact of this is twofold:

1.	All ADG machines at Acre Road will be unavailable from 17:30 on
	Friday 29th April to midnight on Sunday 1st May.

2.	You should notify all people who make direct links into ADG systems
	(e.g. VAXmail users, Notes users of conferences of which you are a
	moderator on ADG systems) of these changes) as soon as possible in
	order to minimise confusion.

	Those people who are responsible for microVAXes or GPX systems
should preferably be responsible for changing their own node numbers and
revising the entries on their DECnet databases within the timescale
outlined above. Assistance is available for anyone who does not feel
compentant to do this.

136.1Temporary change to LPS40 name45380::THOMPSONThu Apr 28 1988 18:1624
    We're going to have a brand new squeaky
    clean LPS40 in the Crescent as opposed to the steam powered version
    we've got at Acre Road.

    The bad news is that the new one will have the same node name (EYE)
    but different ethernet hardware address and DECNET node number.

    On the 29th April, the LPS40 in ACRE Road will become DECNET node
    TOE with a DECNET address of 44.320

    New printer queues will be set up with names LPS40$TOE, PS_TOE,
    ANSI_TOE, REGIS_TOE and TEK4014_TOE. Use these queues to get output
    produced in Acre Road as from Tuesday 3rd May.

    There will also be queues called LPS40$EYE, PS_EYE, ANSI_EYE, REGIS_EYE
    and TEK4014_EYE. These queues will send output to the new printer
    in the Crescent when the VAXes are relocated.

    If you have LPS software installed on your microvax/GPX you must
    reinstall the LPS40C020 kit after you've changed your DECNET node
    area and number. The kit will be available on NECK::

Here are hastily compiled instructions for changing DECNET areas. They seem to
work on the 2 nodes that I've tried. Please phone me if you find errors.
Jerry 6746
----------------------------------------

1 Stop the printer queues that use DQS or an LPS40 on your node

2 Copy NEW_NODE_NUMBERS.COM from NECK::
    (41.708, or 44.324 after 30th April)

3 If you need to reinstall LPS40 software copy LPS40C020.A from NECK::

4 Execute NEW_NODE_NUMBERS.COM to redefine all ADG node names
  (takes about 20 minutes on a Microvax II)

5 Change your network PERMANENT Database
  $ MC NCP
  NCP> DEFINE EXEC MAXIMUM ADDRESS 1023	!this is optional
  NCP> DEFINE EXEC NUMBER 44.xxx !(your new area 44 number)
  NCP> EXIT

6 This step is usually not needed on GPX's or Vaxes
  $ MC SYSGEN
  SYSGEN> show /scs

	If you have SCSSYSTEMID set to a non-zero value then reset it
	to the new area value (1024*44 + node number)

  SYSGEN> SET SCSSYSTEMID xxxxxx
  SYSGEN> WRITE CURRENT
  SYSGEN> EXIT

	If you've changed SCSSYTEMID in SYSGEN then edit the new value into
	sys$system:modparams.dat so it doesn't get wiped out with an old
	value next time you autogen

7 Shutdown & reboot your node to restart DECnet with the new EXEC values
  and ADG definitions.

8 Reinstall LPS40 software kit (if needed)

9 If you use NETUPDATEV2 ,then reschedule any NETUPDATE jobs to run after
  Tuesday 3rd May to avoid downloading a bad database.
