135.0. "I can name that node in six characters (or less)" by ELBOW::DRAPER (Steve Draper) Fri Apr 15 1988 20:42

    Well Folks,
    	The good new is that the move has started. HEAD:: was sucessfully
    decapitated today in preparation for the move.

    The bad new is.....

    We have been told (rather late in the day) that we will have to
    change our DECnet node numbers and some of our node names. This
    is because we will be moving to a new area (in both senses -
    Basingstoke as opposed to Reading, and DECnet area 44 as opposed
    to DECnet area 41)

    Changing to area number 44 will occur first and will take place on all
    systems as they are installed in Basingstoke. Yes - I know it's a bit
    bl**dy late, but it can't be helped.

    Changing the names (to protect the innocent I imagine) will occur some
    time in July. Nodes affected will be RDGE03, RDGE39, RDGE00, RDGE28,
    and RDGE43.

    So, now its time to NAME THAT NODE.

    So far we have had suggestions that just the RDGE bit is changed
    to CRESnn or BASInn, retaining the numbers to minimise the confusion.
    However, if you think differently (or prefer one of the above to
    the other), then why not say so as a reply to this note (or even
    to this node).

    The winner will recieve a deluxe all expenses paid trip for two around
    the Crescent machine room.

	The runner-up will recieve an economy trip around the printer
    room and a souvenier Ethernet terminator.

    As part of your entry you should complete the sentence

    "I name that node <insert nodename of your choice> in spite of...."

    	which will be used by the judges to decide the final winner
    in the event of a tie.

    	Each entry should be accompanied by an Ethernet terminator together
    with proof of purchase.

    RULES
    -----

    1.	The judges decision will be final.

    2.	No correspondance will be entered into.

    3.	Entries for RDGE03 and RDGE39 are registered under the Charities
    	Act, 1887.

    4.	Last date for entries is 29th April. The winners will be announced
    	on some later date.

135.1The first entryRDGE43::DAGLESSTubby/not tubby fat is the questionFri Apr 15 1988 22:3311
    I name that node that used to be called RDGE03, YOYO in spite of the
fact it is up and down like one.

    I name that node that used to be called RDGE39, LONER in spite of the
fact it has recently made appearances on the net.

    I name that node which used to be known as RDGE00 as BALL, and the node
formally known as RDGE28, FAN in spite of the new ADG cluster becoming a
FOOT.BALL.FAN cluster.

    I name that node RDGE43 as BRA, because it supports CHEST.
135.2-< Local> Connect KEVIN >-CHEST::BATEMANSat Apr 16 1988 09:5113

    Does this mean that people working on the ADG cluster could be
    'hooligans'?

    It will also lead to awful jokes during testing on the FUTURS cluster
    of 'trying to *bust* the system'....

    My suggestion for a "practical" ;^) competition tie-breaker is ..

    'Complete the following sentence in not more than 25 words.'

    "My project requires a project room because...."
135.3RDGE00::RUSSELLOh good, not long until EOY/BOY......Tue Apr 19 1988 09:349
    How can anyone disagree with .1

    It was superb.......

    Seriously, are there enough numbers < 255 in the new area to take
    all the PDP's and VAXen that we need, until we migrate to RSTS V9?

    Peter.

135.4New node numbersNECK::THOMPSONThu Apr 21 1988 15:3312
    Yes there will be enough numbers in area 44 lower than 255 for us
    to maintain the links that we have today. They'll be assigned to
    RDGE28/SEPTIC/MAIDEN/ADGV01/RDGE00/VULCAN/RDGE39/RDGE43 and RDGE03.

    But, the numbers assigned to them are unlikely to be the same ones
    that they have in area 41. e.g SEPTIC is now 41.131 and will probably
    not become 44.131, and this applies to all the other nodes.

    If you want to get CASOAS registered as a low node number in the
    new area then contact Martin Hanlon of IS Networks.

    Any chance of MILE and COFFIN being registered with the bods at
    ANCHOR as MC NCP TELL ANCHOR etc retruns an error.

MILE and COFFIN are registered names and (one day) will find their way onto
the ANCHOR database!
