If you're taking a microvax or GPX workstation with you to the Crescent here are some instructions on how to take a backup of your system. I strongly recommend that you carry out these procedures just before you move in case the disks get damaged beyond repair. WITHOUT THIS BACKUP YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO RECOVER YOUR DATA. If you need tapes, contact either Wai or myself. .................................................................... VAX FULL STANDALONE BACK UP PROCEDURE --------------------------------------------- Before starting make sure you know how to load and remove a cartridge from the tape drive, below are instruction on how to do this. 1) LOAD TAPE CARTRIDGE INTO THE DRIVE ------------------------------------- 1.1) Ensure that red light button in front of box is off (out position) and that green light is on 1.2) Pull up flap, 1.3) Push tape into slot 1.4) Push down flap, and WAIT UNTIL GREEN LIGHT COMES ON 1.5) Then, push in red button, wait for green light to come on again 2) REMOVE TAPE CARTRIDGE FROM THE DRIVE ------------------------------------------ 2.1) Push red button once (to the out position) 2.2) Wait till red light goes off and green light comes on. 2.3) Pull flap up 2.4) Remove cartridge. 3)STANDALONE BACKUPS ---------------------- To Perform stand alone alone backup on a vax. The following steps must be followed. All the backups are to be done to tape cartridges, 3.1 INITIALISE TAPES ------------------------ 3.1.1) Load tape (following procedure discribed in 1)) 3.1.2) Go to a terminal and type: INITIALISE MUA0: TAPE and wait for the prompt to indicate that the tape has been initialised. You need to initialise one tape per RD53 disc drive (NB if you have full RD54 discs, you'll need 2 tapes per RD54 disc drive). Initialise all the tapes that you're going to use. 3.2) BUILD A BOOTABLE STANDALONE BACKUP KIT ---------------------------------------------- 3.2.1) Log on to the system as a user with privileges and enter @sys$update:stabackit DUA1. This will build a standalone backup kit for you on drive DUA1 3.3) SHUT DOWN THE SYSTEM ------------------------- Plug in a terminal to the console port of the VAX (not needed on GPX's) Log on to VAX as a privileged user and enter @SYS$SYSTEM:SHUTDOWN The following will appear on screen when running shutdown contents of <> indicates user input. How many minutes until final shutdown [0]:<return> Reason for shutdown [Standalone]: <return> Do you want to spindown the disk volumes [NO]? <return> Do you want to invoke the site-specific shutdown procedure [YES] <return> Should an automatic system reboot be performed [NO]? <return> When will the system be rebooted [later]: <return> Shutdown options (enter as a comma separted list): REBOOT_CHECK Check existence of basic system files Shutdown options [NONE]: <REB><return> Then wait for the system to shut down, approx 4 mins. 3.4) SAVE DISK DATA WITH STANDALONE BACKUP ------------------------------------------ Repeat this procedure for every disk, including your system disk. 3.4.1) On the back of the vax, near the top is a small black lever-like switch, above and below this switch are two symbols, one is a black circle, the other is a black circle with a dot in it. After shutdown, push this switch toward the black circle with the dot in it. 3.4.2) Open the door at the front lower left hand side of the vax. The top left hand pair of buttons are marked "HALT" "RESET" Press these together twice, so that the green light beside on the RESET button is on, and the red HALT light is off. after a few seconds a >>> prompt will be displayed on the console. 3.4.3) At the >>> prompt type B DUA1: Enter the date and time when prompted (approx 3 minutes). You should now be running Standalone backup from DUA1 and have a $ prompt on your screen. 3.4.4) Load the backup tape onto the drive, procedure detailed in 1). 3.4.5) At the $ prompt type $BACKUP/IMAGE/RECORD DUA0: MUA0:DUA0.BCK/log Each filename copied will be shown on the screen. The green light on the tapedrive should flash after no more than 60 seconds. When the backup has completed the console will display a $,( if you are running VMS4.5) Or "do you want to do another backup" message if you are running VMS 4.7. Backup takes from 5 to 45 minutes per tape. If there is not enough room on the tape to complete the backup the VAX will ask for another one. If this happens unload the first tape (see 2) and load a second initialized tape before answering the prompts issued by the backup procedure. Label each tape cartridge with the backup save_set name (eg DUA0.BCK), the date, and the VAX name. Repeat the backup command for each disc drive, (using a new tape for each backup command!) $BACKUP/IMAGE/RECORD DUA1: MUA0:DUA1.BCK/log $BACKUP/IMAGE/RECORD DUA2: MUA0:DUA2.BCK/log ($BACKUP/IMAGE/RECORD DUA3: MUA0:DUA3.BCK/log) 4) REBOOT THE VAX -------------------- 4.1) When you've backed up all the disks push the black lever-like switch at the back of the microvax so that it points at the circle symbol with the dot OUTSIDE it. 4.2) Press the pair of switches on the front of the machine (the ones with labelled HALT/RESET) twice until the green light comes on. The Microvax will then restart itself, after going through the various tests, and will start executing the site specific startup procedure after about 3 minutes.

When you move to the Crescent please leave all DELNI's, DECservers, transciever cables etc behind. All comms equipment at Acre Road should remain behind. New connections will be provided for you when you arrive at the Crescent.

Yea, though the people of Acre Road were much industrious and did produce an abundance of wealth for The Company, yet there came a time when all was not well. And the oracle did pronounce that the time to go on a pilgrimage to the south was fast approaching and all the subjects of the company must be uprooted with their terminals and books and pens and anchovies. Even so there was yet little room on the discs and the pronouncment came that all the subjects of The Company should purge their files and remove all the crap that hath remained from the results of their industries and that crap should be discarded and become as but ether in the net and pass into nothingness. And those that failed to heed the pronouncements in time were punished most severely and the great diskquota beastie did byte. And there was much wailing and gnashing of hairy teeth as a myriad of Doom creatures were deleted from the ether.

Just for clarification (a.k.a. I'm too thick to understand the original message). Do I take the data cable that joins my terminal to the hole in the wall or not? Connectively yours Ian.

Re: Your Biblical address. I am unclear about roles. Is it me, you or Steve who has to part the Red Sea or do we all have to walk on water as usual. (and can we leave Acre road before the last plague arrives; we've had the rats, boils, starlings, flies and coffee).

Since I'm a software chap, and don't understand these hardware terms, is the transciever cable the one that goes from the ethernet connector on the micro PDP to the DELNI? Are these cables being provided? Ta, Peter.
133.6 | Cables to be removed | NECK::THOMPSON | Thu Apr 21 1988 14:20 | 22
As I understand it we leave behind *all* cables which join terminals to LAT points, and all ethernet cables joining Microvax/GPX's/PDP to either ethernet H4000 points (Black objects, about 8"x4", make a tee joint in the yellow covered ethernet cable) or to DELNI's (grey boxes with the word DELNI written in red under the Digital logo!). The exceptions include cables which you've obtained from System Management, or before that, Joan Early, which are usually the pale grey ones with the Digital logo on the plug ends. Take those cables with you. Also take cables which join printers to terminals. They won't be provided at the Crescent. It would help if you could return any spare cables you've got to Wai before 29th April so that a pool of spare cables is available at the Cresent from day 1. At the moment that pool is very limited because they seem to travel in one direction only - out. If you've got any unused VT100's or broken terminals stacked on the top of cabinets etc. then you *must* make sure that they go to your new location.

The last note mentioned that you should bring your VT100's with you to your new abode. Why, you said, should I bother lugging that old heap down to a posh new office where I can't even use it? The reason is I may be able to do an exchange for VT220/240's if you bring it round to my rabbit hutch. Unfortunately this offer doesn't apply if you left your VT100 at Acre Road unless you included 2 ethernet terminators with your entry to the 'Name that node' competition.

I brought both my VT100's down here with me, the next day they both disappeared! Now if I had both these and my 2 VT220's can I trade them all in for a GPX? :-) Tony

I have a box full of assorted cables (basically, anything not screwed down came with me). Do they have any trade-in value? DO you give Green Shield stamps? I'll swap a Geoff Hurst, Nobby Stiles and a Gordon Banks for a VT340. Any takers? Rambling of EUE. |
