119.0. "Copying over DECNET with PMR" by CHEST::THOMPSON () Wed Feb 10 1988 16:40

    All VAX nodes on easynet should now be running SECURPACK, the DEC
    proscribed prophylactic for protection against hacking. One side
    effect of this package is that Poor Man's Routing (PMR) should no
    longer work.

    This means that whereas you could previously copy between nodes
    by daisy-chaining node names together (e.g. copy *.* FOOT::HAND::*.*)
    you should now get a Decnet error-in-node-name message.

    Instead, you should be able to copy directly to the destination
    node name (e.g. copy *.* HAND::*.*).

	Will we be getting up to date node databases on all machines. RDGE43
does not now that FOOT exists at the moment.

119.3I wanna be a Rich Man, not a Poor Man!RDGE00::RUSSELLI think, therefore IAM is OK by me.Thu Feb 11 1988 16:2822
    There is a potentially seroius problem with this.

    The Poorest men in the place, i.e. us cranky old cranky old PDP
    users with our Decnet Phase III software can only see, and be
    seen by, machines in the same area with a node number < 255.

    This means we cannot transfer any programs/objects/files from
    SEPTIC, for example, directly over to european machines.

    The reason we cannot do this is that the PDP's are using RMS V1.8;
    if our .OBJ files reside at any stage on a VMS system, they get
    RMS V3.0 attributes assigned. When the files eventually wend their
    way back to a PDP, it can't understand the new-fangled widgits.
    Hence the software won't build.

    We do have a workaround in place for the time being, but it's a
    bit late to discover that the PDP's are "locked out" of the network
    after this software is installed; surely we aren't the only people
    with this problem?

    Re 199.1 - NetupdateV2 isn't very robust and will die in
    mid-update from time to time leaving nodes with less than perfect
    DECNET dbases. I've restarted it again on RDGE43 and CHEST, so the
    full Dbase should be there again tomorrow.

    Re 199.2 - ooops! Does anyone know what we're spozed to call DEC-Direct
    now?

    Re 199.3 - I've reinstated PMR on U28 so that our PDP's can see
    the rest of the PDP world (well, Europe anyway). I'll ask the SECURPACK
    authors if they know of another solution.
119.5Let's install RSTS/E V9.5 instead...RDGE00::RUSSELLI think, therefore IAM is OK by me.Tue Feb 23 1988 15:117
    Re .4

    Why do we still need PMR on RDGE28? what, if anything, has happened
    with ADGV01?

    Peter.

119.6You're OK, how am I?FOOT::THOMPSONTue Mar 01 1988 16:068
    You need PMR on U28 because the PDP's run an old version of DECNET,
    where "old" is now tending towards "ancient".

    ADGV01 is fine, it's just that it won't converse with our
    PDP's any more i.e. the DMR's are working, the DMR cables are OK
    but links to the 4 PDP's cannot be started.

    TSC Basingstoke are still trying to find out why.
