117.0. "FOOT down again!" by RDGE00::SMITH_I (Fast as a Mamba, Brave as a Lion!) Mon Feb 08 1988 08:10

Is there a major problem with node FOOT? I arrived at 7:50 this
morning to find that once again it is not available. If there is
a serious problem perhaps someone would be kind enough to inform
us poor little users what it is, so that we may be prepared for
    some down time.

Node RDGE28 is also unavailable, though it does show up as a cluster
member, again, the reason it is not available would be nice to hear.

    Regards,
    Ian

Foot went down after work on power supplies at weekend. Engineer
worked on it from 09:00 until 16:30 eliminating possible faulty
power modules. Problem was escallated at 16:30 to district support
level. Engineer phoned USA at 22:00 for further help. 3 possible
components identified as root of trouble. All 3 sent from London
at 23:00. Machine was up again early on Tuesday morning.

U28 did not reboot cleanly on Sunday. This was why it was running
but not available until 11:15 on Monday. I tried to build in the
parts of systartup that appeared to be missing in the period
between 09:00 and 11:00 before deciding that it was a reboot job.

I did leave phone messages for you during the day regarding progress
with the hardware fault. Perhaps these weren't relayed?

I'd like to thank the rest of you for your patience (and good humour)
yesterday. As I think you can see, although there was not much evidence
of real progress as far as you were concerned, behind the scenes
there was a lot of work going on to fix the problem, and I was trying
my best to extract as much grunt as possible from the two remaining
    VAXes in the cluster.
