| I've stopped coming in early on Thursday's for exactly this reason.
Over a four week period recently, the cluster was not available
early on Thursdays for three weeks.

94.3 | Used tenners will do nicely Sir! | HEAD::THOMPSON | | Fri Nov 27 1987 16:23 | 23 |
| Last week the ADG cluster was down on Thursday morning because backups
hadn't been completed by 11:00pm the previous evening. Is ops are
longer prepared to work overtime to finish the backups and so the
machines were left down for the morning shift to complete them.
In fact System management came in early the following morning to
finish them of asap.
As a result of this I modified the system startup files to introduce
volume shadowing following the next reboot. What I didn't realize
at the time is that the volume shadowing licence key hadn't been
installed. So when the machines were rebooted on Wed evening not
all the disks mounted. So at midnight on Wednesday I copied the
old systartup file back and tried a reboot.
Unfortunately I made a mistaek, and copied the old file into
sys$specific instead of sys$common. These things tend to happen
around midnight!
That's the explanation. So what's the fix? Well, if you'd care to
donate a small percentage of your pay to either myself or IS operations
I'm sure some arrangement could be reached to give you a 24hour
service.

In recognition of an improvement....
...the ADG cluster was working fine this morning when I logged in at 8:30.
Thanks

Well, yes, but if you had logged in at 8:15, the system time
was actually set for 6:15.
This caused me a very serious problem, as my batch job to update
my notes hadn't run, since it kicks off at 7:00. :^)
But at least it was there!!!
Peter.

94.6 | Clockwork processors? | FOOT::THOMPSON | | Tue Dec 15 1987 11:55 | 5 |
| The wrong time is a feature of the 8530 processors as far as I can
determine. I'll ask the IS operators to check that the system time
is right after standalone backups.
PS - This is also a problem on RSTS 9.4 ethernet clusters.

Ummm, Jerry, please can I cluster my micro PDP running RSTS 9.4
with something? I must have missed that product announcement...
We obviously need an atomic clock to regulate all this stuff.
Peter.
