84.0. "FUTURS backup/shutdown change" by RDGE00::THOMPSON () Tue Nov 03 1987 16:33

    The operators have asked forthe backups on FUTURS to begin earlier
    on Friday nights - starting at 5:30 instead of 7:00pm. The reason
    for this is that the full backups are running into the early hours
    of the following morning.

    The alternative way of taking full backups would be to split them
    over 2 consecutive nights. Whilst this would mean that the cluster
    could stay up for longer in prime time, file restoration procedures
    would become a little trickier.

    Unless anyone voices strong objections, I'm for letting the operators
    shut down at 5:30pm on Fridays.

Thankyou for acting on the replies to previous notes of a similar vein in the
past, at least we have had some flexibility in our working hours since we got
these enormous disk configurations. But for how long???

I repeat my reply to previous notes that it is quite some imposition on us to
have machines SHUTDOWN at 17:30.

Now that we have these huge disk configurations, maybe it is the time to
reconsider the approach that is taken to backups, or the service we get
from operations.

    I've got a better idea; shut it down at say 4:00pm so we cn go home
    early and miss the traffic.....

    Sounds good to me.

    I object , too.

    There must be some other solution than just pulling the plug!

    As an aside: why do we have to lose the entire system just to take
    a backup of a data disk?

	The same applies to the ADG cluster which already shuts down at
	5.30pm on Wednesday, it's very annoying since the evenings are
	usually the only time to get a reasonable response time from
	the machines !!

84.8HSC backups - here we come!FOOT::THOMPSONThu Nov 05 1987 13:294
    OK - I get the message, you'd like to work on in the evenings. Apart
    from Jane who wants to work night shifts to get a reasonable response.

    I'll see if I can devise a new plan - a little more cunning perhaps.
