42.0. "New, improved (??) Games Directory" by RDGE28::DRAPER (Steve Draper) Fri Dec 05 1986 09:22
As part of the never-ending search for more disk space, it has
been discovered (not surprisingly) that many people are holding
copies of commonly used games e.g. Moria, Golf, 747, ZK etc etc.
In pre-cluster days we tried to avoid this by setting up a common
games directory, but unfortunately in the Great Rush to build
the cluster, this seems to have been overlooked.
So.......
Following an absolutely underwhelming public demand (of at least
two requests), and in the name of Resource Conservation, we are
pleased - nay, privileged - to announce the re-establishment
of the
GAMES DIRECTORY
After hours of debate, plus invaluable input from sub-committees
and working parties, it has been decided that a suitable logical
name to point to this directory would be
SYS$GAMES
So come on, people, don't be reticent (shy) - dust off those
old games and donate them to the world (of ADG Reading). After
all, the season of goodwill is now upon us - or so the ad's would
have us believe! Remember, there are now only 14 games-playing
days to Christmas (20 if you work week-ends!!). Just think of
all those disk blocks you can recover! And remember....
A GAME A DAY MAKES THE PROJECT DELAY

Done: I've removed GOLF from my account.
NOTE: if you want to run GOLF with the default course, you'll
have to set def to SYS$GAMES first.

42.2 | What about some structure here!! | RDGE28::HAYES | Ian Hayes, DTN 830 ext 4992 | Mon Dec 08 1986 13:44 | 10 |
| May I suggest subdividing the games directory into subdirectories,
one for each game. From experience, one monolithinc games directory
gets bloody difficult to find your way aroung let alone manage
efficiently!
These days, most games consist of more than one file and often have
score boards etc etc. Splitting them up into subdirs simplifies
the job of using and controlling the whole business.
Hows about it? Votes?

| A number of files in the sys$games directory give 'insuff priv' etc
have you set up an anti-scumbag acl, or is this an accident?
We should be told!!!!!

Well - I never said you would be able to read/play them, did
I ??.
As a qwik fix I've reset all the ownership/protection on existing
files. For new files that people may want to add in the future,
I'll get round to putting a protection ACE in place (one day).
