56.0. "strategies for managing guilt" by PAMSIC::STEPHENS () Fri Mar 14 1997 23:40

Hello again.

This week, from Reader's choice, I received the following mail in the
next (.1) reply. The note concerns a seminar (EY-W324E-S0) which uses
phrases like "sense of guilt" and "managing guilt".

My view of guilt is the recognition of personal wrong.

I won't be able to attend the course, but I would be curious to learn
what material is provided in teaching "strategies for managing guilt"

From a Christian ethics perspective, I would be interested to hear
your comments and insight on the how a corporation deal with the
subject of guilt without a religious basis or bias.

Thank you,
Bruce

MANAGING EXPECTATIONS, ATTITUDES, AND GUILT (EY-W324E-S0)

Overview:

Given all the demands on us and conflicting roles that we play, it's
not surprising that we may be plagued with feelings of frustration and
inadequacy and a pervasive sense of guilt that results from our
perception
that we are not measuring up to personal expectations and those of
others.
This perspective can drain our energy and prevent us from being
productive
on the job and at home.

In this seminar, participants will:

*	Learn how attitudes affect one's perspective of
	managing work and personal life

*	Explore how one's expectations, as well as those of
others, affect efforts to find balance

*	Distinguish between productive and non-productive guilt

*	Learn specific strategies for managing guilt at work
	and in personal life

*	Reframe reality in order to develop a more positive
	approach to life

accessed through the HR page http://hr.imc.das.dec.com or through VTX

ANSWERS TO SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS

o	"I tried VTX Learning and the system was down--how do I enroll?"

VTX Learning can handle only a limited number of users at a time. We
just opened up the seminars to thousands of employees across the US,
so the system is bound to be crowded at peak times. Please be
  	patient, and try again later.

o "Does my cost center get charged for the seminar?"

NO, there is no cost to you or your cost center for enrolling in
these seminars or for late cancellations.

o "I can't tell by looking at VTX Learning which conference room my
     	seminar will be in."

Conference room locations are included in your confirmation memo and
will be posted on WorkLife Connections Web Page
			http://hr.imc.das.dec.com
  	(also see: $VTX Worklife)

o	"I haven't received my confirmation memo. What should I do?"

Confirmation memos are sent out each night so please wait at least
24 hours to receive your confirmation memo.

If after 24 hours you have not received your confirmation, it is
possible that the E-mail address referenced when you registered was
in

error. (Edit user profile to change your E-mail address). Enter the
VTX Registration System and confirm your registration following the
	instructions above.

o	" I work at a small site and my friend is a telecommutter, how do
we
	take advantage of this program?"

A teleconference is planned in the near future that will cover,
using
a discussion format, the main points of the seminar. Look for future
information and registration instructions in the coming weeks.

Here's quick view of two sides of the issue, at least what I had thought
about, and again, I only know about the course from .1, so consider this:

For example, a manager has to TFSO a long time employee due to company
downturn. In the manager's shoes, I could understand a certain level of
implied guilt tied to this aspect of a manager's job. The course could
provide the manager a way to justify or to mediate the feelings of guilt.

On the other hand, the Bible constantly warns using phrases like
"harden hearts" or "eyes that are blinded" or "dull of hearing".
As Christians, shouldn't this be applied to all aspects of life.
A class that teaches some other way to remove guilt, would seem
contrary to a "Christian" lifestyle.

I can agree with some aspects of the course. I think there can be
false guilt. People can be made to feel a false guilt because of
certain expectations others have of them, and/or certain aspects of
their life, and their schedules. This type of guilt can defeat them,
make them tired, stressed, and unable to face things with a clear mind
and heart. This course may be able to help people deal with this type
     of guilt.

Real guilt, guilt for wrong doing, and its real solution will probably
not be dealt with truthfully in the class. There is a solution for
this type of guilt and it is to come before the Lord with a contrite
heart, and seek His forgiveness, which we are assured of because Yeshua
has made the necessary atonement with His life. The second part of
the solution is that where we have wronged someone else, we should
seek forgiveness from them and also seek to repay or repair any damage
we have done. There are some losses and damages which are impossible
to repair or repay, but where we can, we should seek to do all we can
     for healing a broken situation.
