I have a customer migrating Focus (from Information Builders Inc, IBI) from
a 4 CPU Amdahl mainframe to a DEC 4710 running vms v6.1. When a few users are
running the performance is significantly better (twice as fast) then on the
mainframe but as users are added performance degrades to twice as bad as the
Amdahl with cpu 100% and queues near 10. Much of this can be attributed to the
4 cpu's on the mainframe but the sizing estimate for this machine was 25%
used with the current workload. We have attempted to tune the machine and IBI
has sent people to the site to analyze the application. After fighting some
PCA problems, Focus says that 14% of the cpu is in "their" code and about 80%
is in system space (details were lost in workaround of PCA problem). We will
run DECps system_pc reports later today to narrow down the problem but the
focus guru that I talked to said that "most of the alpha stuff is emulated
while it was compiled on the vax". The customer's focus procedures ARE poorly
written and performance CAN be improved by rewritting them but the customer
expects the FAST alpha box to shine and is currently disappointed.
Has anyone out there run IBI Focus in production on an Alpha?
How was performance and what tuning steps helped the most?

| I know that a release of FOCUS (the so-called "Controlled Release") is
now shipping on ALPHA. Can someone first confirm that it works fine ?
Secondly, a question arises from both customer and partner about
interoperability of FOCUS/OSF1/AXP with our IBM SNA gateway
products to allow access from IBM terminals to a OSF/1 AXP
plateform running FOCUS.
IBI France states that this can only work with SNA gateways from
UNISYS with which they seem to have a good partnership.
A first technical analysis makes us think their should be no
technical problems with our gateways, with an integration chain like :
3270 -> Domain GWY --> MEPVT --> AXP OSF/1
TCP / IP services FOCUS
VAX/VMS
Could someone tell me :
- if there are references of FOCUS applications running in the
technical environment described above ?
- OR if there has been reports of technical problems in the
past?
- what is the status of our relationship with IBI ?
